Interesting article! I found this link on goldenfiddle.com (fyi, UGA alum, the guy who runs the goldenfiddle site is a UGA alum as well).

http://www.flagpole.com/articles.php?fp=5133

edit: maybe I'm wrong... is Flagpole just a freebie rag around Athens, or associated with UGA? This is coming from the Technique girl, har.

Though Flagpole is a local Athens rag, as is the Red and Black, UGA has no actual "school" newspaper.
Thanks for the link, though, dana

Thanks Dana.

I've always been a fan of theirs but I was absolutely obsessed with REM for about a year and a half when I was in Athens.

I got to party with Mills once and stalked Stipe one night after a Low show.

I read all the local folklore and went to the REM landmarks. Bands that come out of Athens will always be in their shadow (except Widespread) and I think the majority of them get wrapped up in the bohemian vibe that Athens gives you. It has become more of a musical hot spot since their day but Athens still promotes and nurtures creativity of all kinds.

Ahhh good times....

That said, does UGA still have one of the top five or six journalism programmes in the country?

As far as i know, yeah. It's pretty much Columbia, Northwestern, Cal, Mizzou and UGA, as far as I know. For me UGA was a no brainer, it was FREE.

I loved the Flagpole, and I loved R.E.M. during my formative years (thanks big bro!)

Yeah, UGA being free was what made my choice, pretty much for me. But, I wouldn't really recommend the music program there to anyone that wants to do anything other than teach. The Red and Black (the 'school' paper) is independent since 1980 because they got tired of the administration getting involved in stories, and the Flagpole is an Athens paper, having nothing to do with the university. And as far as I know, the journalism school is still up there in the rankings, but the competition is fierce, and the classes are big. Just about as big as the business school, which really isn't a good thing.
