Slint played the Showbox Saturday night, and if you get the chance to see them on this tour- do it. Opened with Good Morning Captain closed with Don, Aman- nearly perfect all the way through.

Now- the fun part- as most know, Slint is a band with very quiet moments- if and when you see them- don't fucking talk during the quiet parts of the songs. Some of us waited over a decade to see this band live, and I don;t want to hear how the UW grad programs are fucking somebody over during Don, Aman. What amazes me is how many times you can shoot looks to these people, make eye contact and they still won't shut up.

When, after Don, Aman- I finally lose it and tell them to kindly shut the fuck up, one of the girls in the group starts back at me about how they paid their money and we can move if we don't like it- then proceeds to call me a pussy for not hitting her, and if I let a girl talk to me like that, then I can stand there and take it- blah blah blah- so, should I then;
A: Punch this bitch in the face
B: Move to another space in the bar

I chose B- but shouldn't I be able to watch a show without this kind of crap?

I would A. punch the bitch in the face. But since I'm a girl, I can do that to another girl. It seriously IS annoying when people don't shut up during quiet moments of songs... there's just a proper etiquette that should be followed at shows/concerts but unfortunately there's too many dumbasses who don't follow that.

They played LA last night but my dumbass didn't get a ticket and I was too tired to go anywhere. Any Angelinos go last night?

I was trying to get my wife to do it, but she wouldn't. I think there were a lot of people at Slint who read the KEXP e-mail lists and knew that they should go to the show to be hipsters, but had never actually heard the band.

So, apart from the audience and the silly outfits the band wore, how was the music?

I went - got there late, due to various maladies, so I missed Pinback opening (but it seems like they played for under an hour anyways). Slint were quite good, although a bit detatched, and The Avalon lended the proceedings a "Spinal Tap"-ish atmosphere at times. Opened with one of the instrumentals off of the last EP, then Breadcrum Trail. Don, Aman was somewhere near the middle, and "Good Morning" was the last song....

It was pretty good, overall - glad I went. After all, it's not like I'll (probably) ever get another chance to see them, let alone for their first ever LA appearance...

I know, that's why I already regret missing this show... but debauchery from Friday & Saturday shenanagins kicked me in the ass so I was 100% out of commission yesterday.

Which parts weren't entirely perfect?

Is there a fucking point that you're driving at here?- I enjoyed the experience of seeing a band that I waited 15 years to see live. The talking during quiet parts became incredibly distracting due to the fact that I had never seen them live and probably never will again.

You win.

In all seriousness, I just apprectiate good, wholesome irony. This is the second show you've discuss in as many weeks (or whenever the Ambulance LTD thread reared its fugly horn) neither one pertaining to the actual music, but the 'hipsters' in the audience or onstage. and it makes me wonder Why would folks who're more preoccupied with the periphery than the music even bother going to a show?

I'm considering going to the Chicago show, and I was hoping to catch a little insight from our Western bretheren. That's all, really. I would expect my wife who is Japanese and speaks little Engrish to say 'it was nearly perfect all the way through', not our own Jimmy Stripe.

I'm not necessarily saying you're one of those folks, btw. I see a lot of it here in Minneapolis, too. Kids & adults being kids, I guess.

Some people just can't help but do so... I'll admit, I tend to notice the "type" of people I'm surrounded by at each show, just because that's just the type of person I am. But, I don't let it bother me (or at least try not to) because I usually know how it'll be at shows, depending on the venue & who is playing. After all, that's LA for ya...

Sweet.

Actually, I just wanted to hear about the show, if they played my Spiderland favs, and/or if any girls got hit. Postmersh has been the most helpful so far.

YEAH! That's me, Mr. Informative...

BTW, since we're talking about it, the L.A. crowd might've been the most reserved and intensive I've seen here in a while. McMahan even noted in a few times in their non-discussion-filled between-songs tunings...

Things I wasn't as hip to: for about half the set, Brian just sang/spoke, while another guy came out and played his guitar parts. Also, Pajo indulged in some serious guitar wankery 1-2 times that just had me thinking "Jazz Oddessy", per the previously aforementioned lighting..

Things I did like: When Brian sang by himself, he stood sideways on stage left instead of being in front, so that every member could be seen (a.k.a. no covering up/obscuring the view of Britt Walford). Also, although they were a bit less than engaging, they were pretty much note perfect throughout... I'd say more, but I don't want to give more away...

Oh, also, they were sold out of most of their merch already. Sweatshirts were selling for $35-$40, and what little amount of T Shirts they had left were $20-$25 bucks...

Seriously? I refuse to believe that can happen! ;)

i gotta say, i would have to include the annoyance element in my impressions for a show like Slint - or Sigur Ros, Mogwai, Low, Bedhead/New Year and any other band that attempts to involve significant swings in dynamics. fortunately, Boston crowds are generally pretty reserved to begin with...so hopefully there won't be too much of a detracting element from the crowd at the Slint show.

I saw them here in L.A. too. And yeah, the crowd was incredibly reserved. Good Morning Captain was absolutely INCREDIBLE. Really great, tight, powerful performance. But I agree that the whole thing felt a bit detached. Impeccably performed but maybe lacking in passion. Great show, regardless.

Oh, and I took a friend who had never heard of Slint, and she came out loving them. It's so great when that happens.

This was a fantastic weekend for live music.
