I have read some stuff that intrigues me, so I come to you: Why should I like them, and buy a bunch of their CD's?

I haven't pulled out their records for a long time. I think "Las Vegas Story" is my fave, if only for Kid Congo Powers. Good, creepy, blues-y stuff. Not as raw as the Cramps. "Sex Beat" was a minor hit.

What I liked about the Gun Club was that Jeffrey Lee Pierce was attempting some kind of modern blues - but he never quite got there, instead he created something else entirely, and it's hard to put your finger on what it is. In a way, their cover of CCR's "Run Through The Jungle" (on Miami) is quite apt, because Pierce's L.A. sleaze version of the blues ran a punk parallel to John Fogerty's San Fran freak version of the same thing. They both missed by a mile, but totally nailed that "something else".

As a starting point I prefer Miami slightly over Las Vegas Story, although I'd say both are pretty much essential. One warning: Miami has always been in desperate need of remastering (unless it's already been done - I know there were rumours to that effect). Blondie's Chris Stein produced it, and he botched the job quite thoroughly.

Oh, and Miami has one of my fave album covers of all time:

Fire of Love is/was my favorite because it was the first one I heard. Miami is not far behind. They had a fantastic 12 inch single of a song called Death Party that was always one of my favorite releases.

A horrible moment for me was watching Enon try to cover Sex Beat with the asian chick singing. Truly horrible.

In general the Gun Club are a very underrated band, and well worth the shelf space in your collection. I'd love to hear your feedback as you lsiten to some of their stuff.

Gun Club kicks ass.

They were a heavily roots oriented LA punk band that shared much with the Blasters and X. If those bands are up your alley, you're missing out if you don't grab some Gun Club.

Start with Fire of Love, their debut, featuring the single Sex beat as well as a couple of my personal favorites, including She's Like Heroin to Me and Preachin' the Blues.

If you like that one, go further.

Oh..for a Good cover of Sex Beat, check out last year's Two Lone Swordsmen album.

I see you are already well on your way, but wanted to offer my 0.2 cents.

Fire of Love remains my favorite, but for many people my 2nd choice comes as a surprise-Mother Juno. Recorded after the band got back together after about 3 years the album kicks and Jeffrey Lee Pierce and Kid Congo(with an all new band) try some different things.

All the other suggestions you got are right on. I believe Miami was re-released in '04 but don't know if it got the much needed remastering.

Steve

Rule #1: Don't ever talk about Gun Club.
