Buffy creator lassos Wonderwoman

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" creator Joss Whedon is preparing to bring to life another formidable female character in his latest movie endeavour.

Whedon has signed to write and direct "Wonder Woman", a live-action film adaptation of the DC Comics character, for Warner Bros. Pictures.

"Wonder Woman is the most iconic female heroine of our time, but in a way, no one has met her yet," Whedon said in a statement. "What I love most about icons is finding out what's behind them, exploring the price of their power."

He added: "There is a woman behind the legend who is very fascinating, very uncompromising and in her own way almost vulnerable. She's someone who doesn't belong in this world, and since everyone I know feels that way about themselves, the character clicked for me."

According to the lore of the comic book, Wonder Woman is the superhero name of Diana, an Amazonian princess from Paradise Island, an uncharted island to which the Amazons fled to escape domination by the ancient Greeks and Romans. She has super strength, bracelets that deflect bullets and a golden lasso that ensnares victims and forces them to tell the truth. She has, at times, even had her own super vehicle, an invisible plane.

Wonder Woman was created by educational consultant William Moulton Marston and first appeared in All Star Comics in 1941. Because of her popularity, she got her own self-titled comic series six months later. Lynda Carter played the heroine in the TV series that ran on ABC and CBS from 1976 to 1979.

Warner Bros. is known to have been eyeing a Wonder Woman feature for some time.

Whedon created the influential WB Network/UPN drama series "Buffy" and its spinoff "Angel" He is in postproduction on the Universal Pictures feature "Serenity," which he wrote and directed based on his short-lived Fox drama series "Firefly".

His other writing credits include the features "Toy Story" and "Alien: Resurrection", and he is penning the Marvel comic "Astonishing X-Men".

i really con't see this working, but moer power to the character, I guess.

i'm not exactly psyched about him doing the next Xmen movie either, but that's because i'm a massive nerd. that doesn't like Buffy.

I hope he changes some of this....but not too much. It'll be interesting to see who he casts, as well...

This is why I only read Marvel. DC is so incredibly lame.

Their three big characters are an alien, an Amazon woman, and a guy who lives in a cave with an old man and a young boy.

Also, invisible plane??

Golden lasso that makes people tell the truth??

Give me a break.

I don't care if the movie is lame. I only care that they get the costume right and who's filling the costume right and that she kick ass a lot.

What sucks is that it's gonna take 2 years out of his life. 2 years that could've been used to create another TV show or another movie more original then this. Fo' sure you'll see couple cast members from Buffy/Angel/Firefly in this thing.

while DC has incredibly crappy characters, the Marvel universe is also teeming with them as well. The Wasp? The goddamn Falcon? Captain America is pretty lame, too, thinking about it.

The Wasp can change size, fly, and shoot stinger blasts. She would kick Batgirl's ass.

Captain America is intended to be the average joe. He doesn't have any super powers, he just has his average body types amplified to the point of excellence. So that his speed, strength, etc. would be on par with that of an Olympic athlete.

And the Falcon is lame but most black superheroes are.

Wonder Woman needs a golden rope to make someone tell the truth. Daredevil listens to their heartbeat and notices whether or not it speeds up, depending on whether they're lying or not. Top that, DC.

I think anyone over the age of 30 doesn't give rip about the Wonder Woman comic book.

It's all about Lynda Carter, dudes, and wondering if Whedon can top that Wonder.

Captain America has wings on the side of his head and was frozen in a block of ice for three decades. Also, Bucky remains the least developed character of all time.

hey, I like Marvel, and generally they do have better characters than DC but let's not shit ourselves. They both have meen known to make colossal judgement errors.

and regarding black superheroes, Luke Cage and Black Panther both kick ass. So did James Rhodes (at least for a little while) and John Stewart might be my favorite Green Lantern. Guy Gardner still cracks me the fuck up, though

I'm more of a fan of DC nowadays. Their Vertigo line (Preacher, Transmetropolitan, 100 Bullets, Y The Last Man) pretty much beats anything Marvel has put out in the last 10 years.

And if you want lame characters, take a look at some of their villains. Leapfrog? Stilt-man? Paste Pot Pete? Porcupine?

I like Marvel too but DC isn't "incredibly lame".

Ah, but Marvel's characters are bad with the intent of being humorus. Sure, he was called Paste Pot Pete and ran away firing a glue gun but all the heroes made fun of him because of it. Marvel didn't market him as a badass villain that should be feared.

Same with characters like Leapfrog or Razorback or The Spectacular Spider-Kid. Superman had how many superpowered family members?

In closing, I have one image for you:

I rest my case.

I think I remember hearing Debra Winger at one point, but obviously that was in a MUCH earlier incarnation of the project.

Doubt I'll be interested, as I can't watch more than 30 seconds of "Buffy" without being 342 kinds of irritated.

I like how all the comics you're coming up with that are supposedly "lame" are nothing recent.

I don't know any recent examples. I don't read DC. I mean, I guess I could use the fact that Batman has fifty different Bat-vehicles, ranging form Batcycles to Batcopters to Batboards to Batwheelchairs.

Or the fact that Superman puts on a pair of glasses and no one recognizes him anymore.

I just used the above examples because they were ones I remembered from flipping through my dad's collection. And it's hard to forget things like Bat-Hound. A dog wearing a mask.

DC has lots of good titles, especially on Vertigo.

Superman, Wonder Woman, and JLA are flat out awful and can leave a bad taste in your mouth that makes you think all DC is bad, when it isn't.

Agreed on Daredevil though, that has been one of my favorites forever.

Correct, I am just prejudiced against DC.

Also, Power Pack are great. Plus, they have a new series coming out next month.

And though Peter Porker may be a hack, the greatest bad story is She-Hulk versus Dr. Doom ('s cousin Dr. Doom, the dentist).
