Leonard Cohen: Old Ideas

This one arrived yesterday and I spun it about three times in a row last night. If you're at all a Leonard Cohen fan, grab this. It's an excellent outing that I enjoyed as much as just about anything of his. I've tuned in and out of Cohen's music over the years and am far from an expert in his complete catalog, so take that praise with a large grain of salt. I feel pretty sure this year will feature listening to this one late at night prominently. And for you vinyl fans, the pressing is excellent as is the packaging, including an LP-sized lyric booklet.

Nicolas Jaar - Don't Break My Love EP

Based on DW's recommendation, I downloaded and really enjoyed Jaar's album from last year, Space Is Only Noise. So when I saw that this EP was coming out, I pre-ordered it. It's a 10" EP, with two tracks total. I do enjoy it, but I don't think it's nearly as good as the full length as the experimentation just doesn't flow as nicely as on Space.

Listening to current mixes of the solo/acoustic EP that I'm making.

I'll have to check that Jaar out, even if it isn't as good as Space is Only Noise, I'll still probably like it if it is even close.

Echo & the Bunnymen: Ocean Rain

As a non-football fan, mostly from the Super Bowl I remember a commercial used the Killing Moon, which reminded me I hadn't listened to Echo & the Bunnymen in quite a long time. This has now been corrected. Ocean rain features highlights like Killing Moon and Crystal Days, but the whole album flows as a great listen from star to finish. My favorite thing they put out.

The Residents present Sonida De La Noche: Coochie Brake

A million years ago, a big rock fell out of the sky and landed right in the middle of Louisiana. Well, it wasn't Louisiana at that time. But that rock fell, and it hit hard making a giant dent. It gradually filled in but no matter what, it still left a dent. And that dent held just enough water that it became a primeval swamp known as Coochie Brake. Some young guys used to camp in Coochie Brake. They climbed the massive granite boulders that common sense said should not be there. They explored the caves. They sat still and let the Brake speak to them as only the Brake can. Those teens grew up to become The Residents.

It's the Residents, without Randy, but Carlos is back to mumble some Spanish over dark swampy sound collages punctuated with the occasional burst of guitar. A very creepy but accessible outing from the guys. Best late at night with the lights out.
