I thought about starting this thread earlier but couldn't think of a good title. Laughed at his poodle hairdo more than once.
Great player, though.

The 70s Expos and 80s Mets should have been put under a jail a long time ago.

I've had many a chuckle thinking of Kevin Mitchell and company just fucking terrorizing Tim Teufel.

There should be a 30x30 on Mitchell...that guy.

When the Hall "made" him enter as an Expo, might have been the first thing gone right in Cooperstown since Jim Fen wrote about Mohicans.

Of course, when the other choice was Mets, well... But, had Carter been a Yank, for even a minute -- au revoir, les Expos; Big Geoge gets what Big George wants.

Damn. One of those iconic players from my childhood and teen years. Always seemed likable enough, even when I was hating him for beating the Cubs.

he was one of my all-time favorites, especially as a mets fan who caught from little league through high school.

Amen. Growing up in Utah, I obviously had no local MLB team (this was even pre-Rockies/D-Backs, so the closest teams were in California), but my best friend down the street had lived in New Jersey and while there, latched onto the Mets. I jumped on the bandwagon just in time for the '86 season and can vividly remember staying up past my bedtime to watch those amazing postseason games. The Mookie/Buckner crazy Game 6 comeback all started with Gary Carter's 2-out single. I was so young and new to baseball that I just assumed this is how games usually went. Only years later did I appreciate how amazing that really was. Those guys were my heroes and Carter was my favorite. Aside from being someone who clearly enjoyed playing, by most accounts he was a very decent human being as well (in contrast to many others on that squad).

yeah, i've heard nary a bad word about carter as a person, except from expos players who thought he got too much coverage. david wright said something like "if you're half the player and half the person Gary Carter was, you'll be all right."
