Most of the characters in The Wire are massive assholes albeit fascinating to watch interact with each other. However I feel like I could actually be friends with D'Angelo and therefore had some affection for him that I didn't really have for most of the others.

I was upset when he perished and ecstatic when he was avenged.

for me, it's actually her last scene where she tells michael why they were going to kill him. there's like this very controlled fear of death glazed over with the comment about leaving a good-looking corpse. that delivery always blew me away.

Nice try but I've never been an HBO subscriber. I watched these back to back to back on DVD and maybe something like 2 weeks passed between my watching season 1 and season 3.

D was obviously a pivotal character of season 1, but McNulty was the star of the first season.
