I was of the same mind for a very long time. Then, one day, a friend put it on and it just hit me like a ton of bricks. I GOT it.
Not saying that it will happen to you, but it may if you keep giving it a chance. There is a lot there, buried in that murk. Hope that you can hear it one day.

I'm so happy right now...

I just got through my first listen of the new My Bloody Valentine. I was closed-eyed on the couch with the volume turned up just to the point of almost too loud and where I could feel the bass lines resonating.

Here's a quick summary:

SIDE A - A 21st century progression of the MBV signature reverse reverb, backwards tape loop and violently beautiful feedback paired with ethereal vocals. I even heard a discernible guitar riff or two. "Is This and Yes" surprised with the organ synth that felt a tad cheesy at first, but then settled into a repetitive groove. So, without trying to sound like Capt. Obvious, the side sounded like "new" MBV. It ends with the Shields-manipulated sound of winding analog reel.

SIDE B - I definitely felt that Track 6, "New You", was a purposeful start of side B, the more intense of the two sides. When it releases you, left is the impression of a newer, more "industrial chug/21st century noise" direction of MBV.

With this release, they remain the undisputed heavyweight champion of the shoegaze/noise pop pantheon. Now I'm listening to "Loveless", which btw, is still perfect 22 years later. The new MBV is a copacetic follow-up. We can only hope that with Kevin Shields' follow-up of a legendarily "perfect" album, it will be the catalyst that convinces the similarly perfection-paralyzed Jeff Mangum to follow up "In An Aeroplane over the See." MBV also started their resurgence with a live concert comeback...

i have to say, i think this is pretty good, and i say that somewhat conservatively. regardless of the weight of its anticipation, it's obviously a viable extension of "loveless". sonically, there's a lot of interesting things going on, and you can definitely feel the volume and fidelity. structurally, there are interesting patterns and progressions – and i think this is really where they could have dropped the ball, with the risk of too much focus on sonics, but actually pull out something unique and not too straightforward – though perhaps not as much synth layering as i like. favourite track would definitely be "wonder 2", to finish.
