ames Gregory reports:
The list of 90s indie rock survivors is shriveling up faster than Bob Pollard's liver, but it looks like one-time indie powerhouses Built to Spill have somehow managed to beat the odds. After a three-year hiatus-- during which fans were ablaze with speculation as to whether or not the band would ever perform again-- confirmation of recent activity by the Boise, ID trio has sent minor tingles down the spines of aging Gen Xers. According to TinyMixTapes, the band has announced a brief tour of select east coast/mid-west hot spots. A number of dates on the 15-show outing will also see the band playing two consecutive nights in major outlets like New York, Chicago, and Minneapolis. Now You Know...the dates:

05-04 Minneapolis, MN - First Avenue
05-05 Minneapolis, MN - First Avenue
05-07 Chicago, IL - Metro
05-08 Chicago, IL - Metro
05-11 New York, NY - Irving Plaza
05-12 New York, NY - Irving Plaza
05-13 New York, NY - Irving Plaza
05-14 Philadelphia, PA - Electric Factory
05-15 New York, NY - Southpaw
05-18 Norfolk, VA - NorVa
05-19 Carrboro, NC - Cat's Cradle
05-22 Nashville, TN - Exit In
05-27 Englewood, CO - Gothic Theater
05-28 Englewood, CO - Gothic Theater
05-29 Salt Lake City, UT - Velvet Room

As for any further band developments, an album of new material has long been rumored to be in the works, with autumn 2004 originally thought to deliver the fruits of said labor. However, Pitchfork's recent correspondence (read: investigative nagging) with their label now confirms that Built to Spill have indeed been quietly finishing off a new full length LP. The as-yet-untitled disc, which will be their sixth studio album and first since 2001's Ancient Melodies of the Future, is currently being recorded in Portland, Ore., with the band taking on full production duties. A September 2005 release date is being thrown around, but various tracks are expected to be previewed at the aforementioned live shows. A West Coast tour is also tentatively been planned for June, according to a band rep. Stay tuned.

They've been playing in Boise for the last three years. New material sounds good.

this album would have to be pretty amazing for me to care.
not that i have a problem with them, but i kind of hit my maximum capicity for their sound. i think my old office ruined me on them, by playing their albums constantly right after i had already played them constantly in my aparment.

i understand there are far worse fates for office music abuse.
