I don't think that this album is very consistent, which makes it pretty similar to every other album of his. while there are around three songs that i absolutely love (Up the Wolves, Dilauded) but then the rest of it is good but not really sticking with me. this album did cement for me that this guy really is the best at imagery in music. i do like the new sound with the fuller band, though.

I've not disliked any Mountain Goats yet, regardless of whom may/may not be over him/them. Will get this soon.

yeah Dance Music isn't a favorite. there's a few points on this album where i expect him to rip into Suite Judy Blue Eyes or whatever that crosby still and nash song is where they go "do do do do do... DO do do do do do". hell, that might be all of their songs. catchy shit.

on any other day i'd be pissed for getting Judy Blue Eyes stuck in my head, but on this day i have to thank you because you totlly pushed out that Journey song about love finding you. Oddly enough, every time i get that song stuck in my head it is accompanied by the video where Steve Perry is banging his jean-jacketed fist against the wall like he's really got something to say this time. That never happens with videos for me so i guess on that front they did a good job. Still....

Randy Jackson was in Journey? I'm surprised that retard with the long air this season hasn't praised him for it.

towards the end, yeah. he's megalarge and has this kind of J.R. Reid/Bobby Brown ramped up box on his head. i would go so far as to say that he's my favorite of journey's bass players.

wait, you've got a favorite of Journey's bass players? Something tells me that DVD is still stashed around your place somewhere.

Haven't heard a bad MG album yet, including this one...I'm sorry that A) I haven't gotten to this thread sooner, and B) That it was inexplicitly hijacked by Journey talk...

"Pop Music" is really good live and, although it might come off a bit saccarine compared to some of the other songs on the album, it's under 2 min. long - and I like it. The album, for me, seems to pick up more around the edges, with the last three songs ( Song for Dennis Brown, Love Love Love, and Pale Green Things) being my current favorites...

It's easily in my top 3 of this year so far, and probably #1 - but, then again, I've somehow become a huge MG fan in the past couple of years. Asking if the world really needs another John Darnielle album is akin to blasphemy to me...

in response to "do we need another MGs album?" i say yes, since it's obvious his sound is progressing past what he did in the 90s. If he was churning out lo-fi acoustic boom box records one after another i'd concede that you don't really need them ALL (unless of course you're a fanatic), but I'd recommend at least listening to this new one. yeah his singing style/structure is very similar to his signature MGs sound but this album is not and should not be considered the same ol' same ol'.
