I just got a Mac G5 about a month and a half ago. And I've noticed that several web pages that I go show me symbols instead of letters. I figured it was mo big deal at first. But now it's beginning to get really annoying.

I spoke to soemone about it and they told me that I should use a different browser. I'm not too familiar with other browsers so I didn't do it.

Is this right? Is this problem because of Safari? Or does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do to fix this?

Thanks ya'll!

Hey Busty,

I have a Mac, and use Safari and have not had any issue like this. Can you post a link to the sites where you have this problem?

I don't think Safari is a browser that many web developers test for, but I could be wrong.

All I can suggest to fix it, is make sure you have the latest updated OS (10.3.8) and latest version of Safari (1.2.4). If you have both of these installed, try changing your web display font to something really generic like Helvetica, or (gulps) Times New Roman.

Good Luck.

ditto on the no problem with safari thing. I've got it at work, and i find safari screams compared to explorer and netscape navigator. I've never had the problems that you speak of, but i too have the latest version.

One example that happened this morning was the first link on Norhtern Soul's thread about allmusic.com

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1299854/posts

When I click on it most of what I see is symbols. I'm gonna look at versions here in a sec and see if that's what's causing it. Thanks for the advice.

Edit: I've looked at both Safari and OS versions and they ARE up to date.

Hmmmmmm.

I looked all over this site and didnt have any problems.

Try this.

Under the Safari pull down menu, go into Preferences >Appearance> and check and see what typeface you have selected. I have helvetica 14 as my default with Western (ISO Latin 1) as the language.

Does this help?

BACK_SPACE IS THE SHIT!!! Thanks so much! That did the trick. I've been wondering about that ever since I got this thing. You have officially made my day! Thanks again.
