Went to a pretty fun event yesterday afternoon. Local guy has been curating a music show with a ton of local musicians, mostly in the electronic/noise realm but some others as well. I am not sure exactly how many musicians worked on it, but I'd say over 50 and there were 81 pieces in total. But each musician or duo/group, picked an item on display at a local, outdoor sculpture park. They then hand out iPods and you walk around and flip through the corresponding songs for each sculpture. Some of them were really good at syncing up and working with the space while others you could more or less tell the guys just ave 'em some random song. Either way, it was a fun, interesting event. Here's a couple pics...

Image
Johann Feilacher's Redwood I, this is well over 20 feet tall and carved out of a single Redwood. I was told it is the largest sculpture in the world carved from a single piece of wood.

Donald Lipski piece made with 55 giant steel bouys with a couple friends walking by.

Image
Robert Lobe's The Palm at the End of the Parking Lot is hammered aluminum bolted onto the tree. Looks much better in person.

And, here's a link to the Bandcamp of the guy who curated the show. You can get an idea from the clips there what kind of music it was, although there really was a lot of variety even if about half of it was in a similar vein:

Where was this?

I love that first one, for some reason. I could insert some sort of artsy phrase here, but I don't know any. Just that it's straight and interestingly carved wood. And big. What was the music for this one?

Reminds me of this a little, in my sister's town: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/W46ndnUY ... Zez1FrrREw

Often driven by without a glance, take a moment to park and check this out! It was a gas station in the 1950´s (?), built out of a hollowed out Redwood trunk. Ít´s now just a small walk-in and FREE museum (only one room) - with photos of days gone by, gas signage, even a case of old glass oil cans and gas pumps labeled "Ethyl"

1.9 miles from the City Of 10,000 Buddhas!

Laumeier Sculpture Park in St. Louis. Here's a link:
http://laumeiersculpturepark.org/

There's more info there about the event, which is still ongoing, and pics of a lot of other pieces in the park.

The music at the Redwood sculpture was guitar based, kinda reminiscent of Neil Young circa the Dead Man soundtrack. It was one of the anomalies as the majority of the stuff was electronic based, but lot sof field recordings mixed in, which helped blend with the outdoor atmosphere, especially the stuff in the woods.
