So, I'm starting to see some pop up. Thought I'd put this thread up for people to drop them in as they come out.

Don't have this in list form but here's Paste's Top 50 of 2012:

Oh, and for the record, I'm not suggesting folks put their individual lists here, just those from the various media outlets.

They should start coming fast and furious in the next couple of weeks.

Excellent, checking stuff out now. Liking the Father John Misty, or at least the first song. Titus Andronicus not so much.

Haven't heard most of what is on that Paste list. I was really displeased with that Grimes record...for me it was a huge step backward from where her last album was...seems like I am alone in this thought though as everyone seems to really dig this new one.

Titus is a grower, but still not nearly as great as The Monitor.

Haven't heard Titus or Father John Misty yet. Grimes was OK but nothing special. Nice to see Paste put First Aid Kit and Sharon Van Etten up high.

Only ones I've heard from the Decibel list is High on Fire (yay metal) and Swans (mindfuck much?). That said, I've had Converge, Torch, and Gojira in the Spotify queue for a while.

Mojo's list looks pretty safe, though still quite a few in the queue as well (Django Django, Hot Chip, Cat Power). Tame Impala is growing on me on each listen.

Piccadilly Records Top 100.

For those who don't know Piccadilly Records is sort of the Rough Trade of Manchester. It's a good site to check out for new music.

I had pretty much forgotten that Jack White put out a solo record this year.

Good to see people enjoyed Dylan's Tempest as much as I did. Also good to see Shovels & Rope on a list (and probably on more as the year winds down).

I think about half of it is really good which is a lot more than I liked of The Monitor where I liked one song and thought the rest terrible.

The Fun. album is notably absent from these lists. A case of music snobs purposefully ignoring the commercially successful?

Come on, Todd, a lot of people just flat out do not like that band.

It's great that you do, but the rest of us aren't pretending or arbitrarily turning up our noses.

I am not saying that isn't the case. I'm just saying that, earlier in the year, they were getting a lot more love from a lot more publications and that a lot of that love has disappeared.
Maybe it's a case of overexposure more than snobbery. But, being a bit of a snob myself (and admit it, you are, too), I know the thinking.
Not offended by their exclusion. As you pointed out, taste is taste. Just wondering about their sudden disappearance from the love.

Critical opinion of it is all over the place (note Paste/Mojo aren't listed) but tends to normalize at good-not-great, which is where I would put it. As much as I love the title track and most things Monáe, nothing else on the album really stuck. Also, Nate Reuss guesting on the new P!nk album shouldn't throw me off (I like quite a few of her singles), but it does.

Again, I smell reactionary. Look at the dates that the reviews were published -- most of the positive ones came early in the year, while ALL of the negative reviews (excepting Consequence of Sound) came after "We Are Young" was all over the radio.
Again, all have their merits and all are entitled to their opinions. But that is peculiar.

Piccadilly have excellent taste for the most part. Usually discover a handful of great releases every year from them. This years it's the superb Goat album. Fucking brilliant record.

I agree with Todd, in that the love dried up when they started being over-played. Those magazines cannot be seen praising something that ran all over Top 40 Radio, they'd lose "cred."

Having said that, it's not that good an album overall, so i would argue it was the initial praise (over-praise above what was warranted) that was the real fault, not the later snubbing.

Thank you for backing me up.
And, on your second point, I respectfully disagree.

Saw this one the other day and this:

Quote:
32 Farrah Abraham – My Teenage Dream Ended

Sent me scouring the internet to confirm that this actually existed. I've now read varying opinions on this and it ranges from "horrifyingly terrible" to some but others,(see: The Atlantic), see it as some avant garde soul baring art piece. Either as some comment on society or celebrity. I don't know.

Regardless, kill yourself for thinking this is anything other than some awful, desperate attempt to cash in on pathetically aquired fame from someone with zero prospects for, well, anything.

I've finally found a reason to use the "private session" setting on Spotify.
