I am on a serious Galactic/Stanton Moore/Liquid Soul/Trombone Shorty kick, and am looking for more stuff like it. Love the brass, love the 'acid funk', the 'electronic acid house jazz', whatever the funk you would call it. I want to stay away from the rap aspects, Galactic has several songs that veer too close to that genre for my tastes. I would really like the stuff to sound good (that means audible bass), so please, no obscure 60s stuff.

I have one Arrested Development song (Miracles) that's pretty close, but again, is kinda close to rap.

Here's a Liquid Soul track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5uDWwldxbM And another: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JSRS5yF4ow

Any Obner suggestions?

Thanks.

Unless my memory is failing me, I'm pretty sure Prince of Darkness would suggest Liquid Soul kindly go fuck themselves.

Also, you might try out some Buckshot LeFonque.

And this just came up on Exystence:

Quote:
The Lotus album Build, out February 19, 2013 on SCI Fidelity Records, propels through ten tracks with no wasted moments. Built on a foundation of beats evoking vinyl breaks, house, and big-beat, the album is a funky dance party from start to finish. The unmistakable sound of a tight live band is at the heart of the album. Lotus has spent years rocking live crowds and that energy is distilled to a strong studio concentrate of body-moving beats and muscular melodies.

“This album was recorded live to analog tape in studios in Philadelphia and St. Louis,” explains Lotus’ guitarist/keyboardist Luke Miller. “We used live drums, guitar, bass, Hammond organ, upright piano, analog synths, live percussion, and live horns from the group Rubblebucket, then peppered in electronic elements. The project was mixed through an analog process to give it a deep richness.”

Too funny. They asked me to come and play the 20th anniversary show this past january, and I thought about it, but I was in the middle of conducting our high school musical.

I don't have any beef with them, I just don't want to hop in a van with them again.

Try Greyboy All Stars and Incognito.

You'd probably like the latest Rebirth Brass Band album. I'd also think New Orleans R&B comps like the ones from Soul Jazz would probably have a few discoveries for you. Galactic and Liquid Soul have always been a bit too jammy for my taste so I'm afraid I don't have much else to recommend.

How about Karl Denson's Tiny Universe or Soulive?

Not sure if they have enough electronic elements though.

No Sound Tribe Sector 9 rec. from you, Derris? For shame, bro.

Also, when I was into the kind of music I think you're talking about here, I really dug the Return Of The Headhunters album.

Now that I read your first post again, I'm going to suggest Combustication by Medeski Martin & Wood (w/ DJ Logic)

Or maybe The Return of the Space Cowboy by Jamiroquai?

And Combustication is a good suggestion for MMW.

Strangely enough, I'm not sure I've ever even heard a note from them despite them playing here what seems like all the time.

They're clearly huge though. Seems like they're getting a 3 night residency around New Year's Eve here every year now.

I think I only saw them once, at Boar's Head, when they were still just Sector 9 and I didn't like it very much.

Thanks for the leads, guys. I listened to a couple of recs and the problem I had with both is that they use drum machines. Not interested. That's one of the things I like about the bands I mentioned is they use live drummers.

Keep the recs coming! :rawk:

Budos Band, maybe?

I guess it's more funk than jazz though.

Was about to post Budos Band.
I second Derris' Medeski Martin & Wood rec. Shackman was my entry point with them. Used to be a huge fan of MMW.
Also check out Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk.
Herbie Hancock - Head Hunters

The Knoxville Cocaine Cowboys of the late 90s/early 00s was Gran Turino.

If we're going for Budos Band and Antibalas, how about Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade
