Those waiting on Daniel Romano, it's at exy now. I guess this can serve as "that thread".

I think this is the file-link thread, shiv. That said, A$AP Rocky is in my Spotify queue with Broadcast and the Pantha du Prince collab.

I'm on the torrent train these days. Would other people find value in magent links, assuming they're in code tags?

EDIT: Rolling-best for 2013 thread is here.

Stuff from 2013 I'm really enjoying. All links nabbed & available at Exystence.net

Warm Soda "Someone For You"
Divorced from Bare Wires, Matthew Melton's new band unsurprisingly sounds a whole lot like that last one, which means a sloppy melding of indie/punk, power pop, 70s bubblegum and glam.

Night Marchers "Allez Allez"
Speedo Reis returns to the old Rocket From the Crypt sound here. Hammering rock'n'roll with a horn section, not much melody but a shitload of momentum.

Palma Violets "180"
This one's been really growing on me. Sounds kinda like a cross between 80s Echo & the Bunnymen and the Libertines, if that's even possible to imagine. Surprised this hasn't got tons more attention.

Slam Dunk "Welcome to Miami"
I hear two main influences at work here. One is Modest Mouse, mostly in the vocals. The other is straight 50s rock & roll, especially in the use of the honking sax. Kinda shocked the combination works so well.

Jesse Dee "On My Mind, In My Heart"
White guy who apes pretty much every great soul/R&B singer from the classic era. He doesn't add anything to it, for the most part, but when you're hitting targets like Sam Cooke and Otis Redding what's to add? The song "Sweet Tooth" is making a bid as my fave of the year so far.

The Virgins "Strike Gently"
Apparently the first signing of Julian Casablanca's label, these guys rework a "Sultans of Swing" sorta groove with a Noo Yawk drawl over top (although first single "Flashbacks, Memories, and Dreams" adds an atypical semi-disco beat to the proceedings). When it works, which is about half the time, it's pretty satisfying.

Red Jacket Mine "Someone Else's Cake"
Seattle band that successfully revisits (and improves upon) classic post-punk power pop. Costello and Lowe are the guiding lights, but there's room for some of that 70s AM radio gold as well. A grower.

Matt Costa "s/t"
Not exactly sure why this singer/songwriter has made me such a fan, but there's something about the way he flirts with my fave archetypes (50s r & r, T.Rex glam) and incorporates it into his more typically sensitive troubadour shee that just works.

Ron Hawkins & the Do Good Assassins "Rome"
Ex-leader of 80s coulda-beens the Lowest of the Low, Ron Hawkins new one is a 2-disc set. Side one revisits the sound of that previous band - wise-ass lyrics set to some great, tuneful punky pop. Side two is introspective and earnest Americana.

I've been digging the Palma Violets and agree with that E&Bmen/Libertine reference. Virgins are exactly that, satisfying. Red Jackets worth looking into. Matt Costa seems odd but I guess I stayed away from him thinking he was some Jack Johnson renewal type; admittedly, a completely uninformed opinion of mine.

New Josh Rouse is really good - his best since Nashville.

really really like the new Kingsbury Manx. They've skipped my radar since their first couple albums, but it looks like i need to catch up.

Hollis Brown - Ride on the Train
this sounded good to me, not sure how it shakes out yet . . .
Quote:
sparse classic rock sound that incorporates melodic pop, slight country touches, and, underneath it all, a kind of bedrock blues sensibility, and when they’re at their best, they sound like all of those things at once, a bit like hearing Steve Earle fronting a stripped-down version of Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers.

Those guys for me really are one of those bands that put out a good debut and then just gets worse with each outing. Haven't heard this one but not really sure I care if I do.
