Looks like I am going to start a new job soon.
It is pretty laid back and there will be a ton of 'down time'.
Computers aren't allowed. No Wi-Fi at the location either.
Books & Readers are allowed though.
I have an iphone 4.

I think or so I think I have heard about ways to make my iphone 'tether'??, so that I can use the internet on my nook tablet? Use the 3G service from my phone, so i can use the intra-web on the reader.

that make any sense?
How would i go about something like this?
is it discreet? or there lots of wires involved??

No wire, except power cords. T-Mobile phones come with a wifi tether app built in so your phone becomes a hot spot and you can connect your nook to it just like a regular router, with a password and everything. It will most likely require you to have the phone plugged in as it will EAT battery. Check with your data plan for how much traffic you are allowed. (My T-mobile account has unlimited data, but anything over 2 GB, the speed drops down to 2G until my boll cycle is over.)

Most other companies require you to root/ jailbreak your phone to be able to tether wirelessly. I know Verizon charges extra ($25 a month-ish) to be able to do this so you don't need to root your device.

Edit: And yes. It is discrete. Nobody has to know about it but you and anyone else who sees you on the internet when they look at your nook. (Also, you need to have wireless reception where your office is for all of this to work. I know it's obvious, but something to consider. Basements and concrete bunkers usually have terrible reception, and therefore shitty wifi capabilities.) ((Also also, the internet speeds will probably not impress you.))

I forgot to mention that I do have Verizon.
Ugh. I def. don't want to spend $25 bux a month.
The job is at a house with a pretty clear 3G signal and easy access for it to be plugged in all day....
ok, i have a direction i guess...
thanks dude.

The Kindle II has a free 3G model. Its not as flashy as the touch or Fire but does what you want it to do. Plus, with newer models out, you can probably get it super cheap.

I went back and forth between getting either the Kindle Fire or the Nook tablet but decided on the Nook because you can upgrade the memory to 32gb, whereas you can't on the Kindle.

Also, with the nook, even the B&N store is lack-luster, you can get a N2A card, that you plug in and it becomes an android device that opens it up to everything....

Yeah, I have free unlimited tethering with my Tmobile plan. They recently started sending messages that they were going to start charging $15/mo. for it but then told me it was free with a 5GB/mo. data plan (which I have). Works great, I use if for my iPad, laptop and the computer at the warehouse (where, because we all have T-mobile we dont have to have internet access)

I highly recommend this offline reading app for syncing web content to your device.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... tlater.pro

Just sync it up when you get a wifi signal. This is the #1 app I use on my nook. Great for saving long internet articles for later when I have more time to read. I can either save a link to it via my phone or my computer. When I sync the app, it's all on my nook to read on the go. I hardly use my nook's wifi in an effort to conserve battery. I use it for reading and games. (Not surfing...it's too slow and cumbersome.)

Also, I rooted my nook and put on a custom CM7 ROM so it's basically a mini Android tablet too.

So, I did just a little bit of investigating...
So I can either jailbreak my phone and get an app that can do this, or I can get a device from Verizon (they have a few free ones), but then pay $25 a month for the ability to use it as a wifi hot spot? do i have this straight?

i may jail break then :/ unless their are any other options that havent been mentioned.... hmmmm

If you jailbreak your iPhone to allow tethering, Verizon can monitor your account for data usage. I've heard stories of warning letters going out about overage costs, throttling accounts, and even closing accounts for abusive data usage that exceeds the contract agreement.

I believe the separate device Verizon is selling needs to be plugged into the USB port of a laptop or computer to get connectivity and since you can't have a computer...unless it is their 5 port wireless hub which uses your phone data connection, but uses the device to actually broadcast a wifi signal, that you can connect 5 devices or something like that.

Most libraries have an app where you can electronically check out books. After so many weeks the app removes them from your device. I'm not sure about renewing, etc. People at work have done this and say it's a breeze. I've spent the better part of 3 years trying to get through 5 books. I have finished 2 and am halfway through the other 3. If only I spent as much time reading as I do tinkering on the internet/ computer/ phones/ nooks.

So the most important question is: where do you work security?
