You can't file for an extension if you're past April 15. You just need to file late. There will be some penalty for late filing. If I had to guess, I'd say $100 and interest if you owe money. I wouldn't wait until next year as Stu suggests as any interest will continue to grow.

You can either call the IRS and have them calculate interest and penalties for you after you've figured out what you owe on the taxes, and pay with one check or just file the return as calculated ignoring the fact that you've filed late. In the later case, they'll still calculate for you and just send a bill or deduct it from your refund if you were owed one.

Yeah, still probably a $100 or so. At least that's what the corporate filing late fees have always been. I've never filed a personal return late but I'd assume that it's the same.

I wonder if you get a refund, they'll just deduct 100 bucks from it for your late fee...

I've e-filed late before and don't remember anything being annoying.

My brother was late efiling last year due to some technical snafu and was not punished. He had attempted to submit his taxes a month earlier and ignored an email message telling him that it had not been properly received by the system. They seem pretty lenient toward folks who owe little to no money, and have no prior audit issues.

I wouldn't worry with it. They're just gonna waste it, anyway.

If you don't owe additional taxes, there is no penalty for filing late. Although, if you wait more than three years, you forfeit any refund owed to you.
