from MTV.com

As Avril Lavigne's tour behind Under My Skin touches down in Taiwan, the Philippines, Singapore and Indonesia this week, her fans in these countries can rest assured that while the Canadian songstress won't be talking about her love life to

"Sometimes I cannot stand playing 'Complicated,' but what makes it worth it is when I do play it the crowd gets really excited." — Avril Lavigne

I hate bands who frown on playing their well known 'hits' or 'singles'....Sure, it can be tiring, but a majority of your audience are probably not super hardcore fans who only wanna hear deep album cuts or b-sides..... just shut up, and play the songs people wanna hear...they paid for the tickets!...

just a little late day rant...

in some cases i disagree.

exhibit a:
why do the Flaming Lips still play, "she dont' use jelly" every show?
no one wants to hear that shit. play the good songs.

exhibit b:
the rolling stones don't need to play the same set of tired hits ever show. play something you are exctied about. the fan base is knows more than they realize.

I havent been to a Flaming lips show before so i dont know if 'She dont use jelly' is a standard or not.....but , in a sense, that song was so long ago, and the band became more critical faves in thelast 3-5 years, that i would 'GUESS' that a majority of their current fanbase, doesnt even care about that song anymore....

in the same send, Radiohead, with Creep....

I was more in so, some bands attitudes about playing their more wll known songs....

Just an example of how even rock stars sometimes look at their vocation as "just a job." Hey, we all have to do crap we don't want to do in our jobs. But the majority of the pros do it (performing their hits over and over and over), most casual fans dig it, and in the end, it's all good. Just another reason to detest Avril... hey Avril, if it wasn't for "Complicated" or "Sk8er Boi," no one would have given you the time of day.

actually, the stones played several different sets the last time they toured; mostly based on the venue size (theatre, arena, or stadium) they usually resurrect a few deep cuts on every tour.

That being said, you are right in theory, but I mean they were busting out stuff like "Neighbors".

You also have to consider the staging with the lights and all. I mean sure, I don't need to see "Sympathy For the Devil" but I have to admit the production on that, and also "Can't You Hear Me Knockin" kicked ass.

Van Morrison is pretty notorious for having no tolerance for fans expecting him to live in the past and crank out the same hits every night. He plays whatever he feels like playing on any given night.

They have so many songs that they forget most of them unless they go out of their way to rehearse them. Its one that they never stopped playing, so they keep it up.

all of the beatles songs are popular, that's why they stopped playing shows.

On a somewhat related note, Dylan will often play his songs with arrangements so different from the original as to make them almost unrecognizable. Annoying for some songs, freshens up others.

If a band is as big as the stones, they have so many well known songs, it is nearly impossible ot play every single one of em....

I mean Avril..if she is goin on tour and playing 75 minutes......is it too much to ask, for you to play the 5-6 big hits you have...it takes up 20 minutes, and you can play whatevr else ya want...

same with any band.....personally, im on of 'those people' who want to hear some of the lesser known cuts when i see em play...but i certainly appreciate , get exicted for, and anticapate when the 'hits' are played as well....

there is room for both..so stop bitching Avril.....

I wish Nada Surf would play "Popular". They were cast as a one hit wonder cause of that song. Well, according to mtv. I love ALL their music and I'd love to hear "Popular" live in '05.

They say they don't want to be associated with that single anymore. Too bad.

That's a good example......They don't wanna be associated withthat song anymore?? Ya mean, the one they loved enough to write and record and put on their album...Te song they and the label to film as a video and release as a single....The song that helpe d the band sell 1.5 million copies of their record, and put some money in the bank for them???

They can't spare for 3 minutes and 30 seconds of their precious show time????? I'm sure Stacey's mom wants to hear 'Popular"!

I'm with you- I saw them when they toured their last record because people swore to me that they had "reinvented" themselves and were a great band. They were one fo the worst things I've ever seen in my life- freestyle rapping "Popular" would have helped that show out.

Chrissakes- Put a setlist together and play your show, don't bitch about what you want to play or don't want to play. How many of us really need to hear the "deep cuts" from Avril Lavigne or Nada Surf?

Y'know why Avril doesn't like to play "Complicated"? 'Cuz the ho can't carry the tune. Seriously, she'd have trouble finding the notes even if they were cornered in her purse.

But in terms of, like, real bands, I kinda like it when an artist gets ornery and refuses to play the big single. The Pixies refused to play "Here Comes Your Man" after it got played on MTV, and I couldn't have liked 'em more for it. And if a band does play the big single, they should fuck up the arrangement something awful. Give the people what they want? No way. Kick 'em in the balls, I say.

yes. a trip to toronto with my sisters and mom proved that to be unfortunately true. i thought my mom was going to throw away all of her van morrison cds for a while there. . .

. . .on another note, i'm always curious if jerry jeff walker gets tired of playing "redneck mother" (written by ray wylie hubbard).

Wow. One of the worst things, eh? I'd say their back to back shows at Schubas in '03 was one of the better shows of that year for me. And yes, I'm more than serious about that song. Far from a joke. That song is hilarious and in my eyes good.

The bass player kept stopping to light cigarettes while the other two kept playing. He was the best walking cliche I think I've ever seen.

I hate when bands have like one or two good songs and they don't play them til the end of their set. Just get them over with so I can leave.

I'll say this... I saw Cold Play about 3 months after Yellow got tooooo popular on the radio. I didn't expect to be wowed, but I really was. The only problem was the group of 4 idiots next to us who talked, non-stop, through the entire show, right up until the 4th or 5th second of Yellow, whereupon they commenced to be Superfans and rammed their way up to the front of the place, knocking people out of their collective way. As soon as it was over, they came right back by us and returned to their bored, yelled conversations. Why? They played the song... give them credit. I just wish they hadn't, except for the 3 minutes of peace it afforded me.

I remember reading a story on Charlie Sexton where he recounted going to audition for Dylan's touring band...he was given a sheet with like, 300 song titles on it & was told "you'll need to know ALL of these in multiple keys, cuz Bob never knows what he's gonna play until about 3 seconds before each song starts" . ANY song on the list was fair game.

I saw Jane's Addiction back in '89, & they played pretty much the whole Nothing's Shocking album - except for "Jane Says" . People were pissed . I thought it was fuckin' hilarous.

I doubt it. I've never seen him, but I think this is a song that a new generation of people discover and love and go see him for every year. It has to be fun to watch the crowd whoop during that song...as I am guessing you have seen.

Now, he may get tired of people (like me) who prefer to emphasize the kicking hippies asses and raising hell, and not the fact that the redneck mom made her kid into a redneck. but, ya.
