If milk and meat together is not kosher, is chicken and eggs together ok or not?
If it IS kosher... why? Would seem to fall into the same category as "taking the calf and boiling it in its mother's milk." And please don't cop out and use the "it's (not) in the Torah" thing. I can see what the word of the law is, I'm looking for logical reasoning here re. the spirit/interpretation.
Are there any folks who DO interpret the law in such a way?
Really just curious.

yeah, probably not a question for this forum, but we have a lot of smart folks here who know a lot about a lot of different things, so I thought that I would pose it.

I think it's something along the lines of how pescatarians don't consider fish to be meat, kosher law doesn't consider egg to be dairy.

Which i guess makes sense, since chickens aren't cows?

I get it that egg isn't dairy, and by the same sense, chicken isn't "meat."
But by the rationale of not depleting resources, taking too much from the same animal, or insulting the animal, it would seem to fall into the same category. No?
I am not a Talmudic scholar, obviously. Not by a long shot. But an egg is a part of the chicken, just as the milk is part of the cow. If anything it would be even more-closely connected. So, why?

a quick google seems to indicate that people have been arguing about this for a long time.

I guess that's true with pretty much every aspect of all religions.

Dig it.
But, for this purpose -- they are not same-source animals.
One does not get milk from a chicken and one does not get eggs from cows.

But, chicken and eggs are a same-source food.
Dig it?
;)

Well... self-contained logic, I suppose.
But, yes, point taken.

Since I grew up surrounded by cultural but not but not particularly observant jews I sometimes forget that actual Judaism is just as or even more weird than the other major religions.

Hebrew school was mostly about learning to read Hebrew, the basics of the major holidays and learning how shitty the world has been to our people. The nuts and the bolts of the religion were largely brushed aside.

That was my experience in Hebrew school, too.
Although in Sunday school (a separate thing at my temple), our final year we studied Comparative Religions, pretty much the only worthwhile thing that we did, IMO.
Now, stuff like that I would still enjoy. I should take a class sometime soon. Good stuff.
