I'm a fan of pretty much all of Simon's work and this is no different. I've watched every episode.
I feel like The Wire was more focused because the subject matter was a little more narrow. Treme feels like this love letter the New Orleans, warts n all, but is tackling something that is indefinable. The fact that it works at all is pretty amazing.
Still, I find it works more for me when they're just shooting the shit about everyday life or when Davis is waxing poetic on the old jazz greats.
The stuff with the contracting and the bigger real estate stuff, they just lose me. I know it's all part of the bigger picture but I enjoy the small moments of day to day living.
Then again, seeing small things like Davis's "504EVER" shirt reminds me of all the New Orleans people I know who simply can't comprehend why anyone would live anywhere else and are quick to shit all over other cities. They're also in the Top 5 most obnoxious fan bases in the country (Saints).
It's one of the most completely immersive viewing experiences I've ever had. It captures the essence of New Orleans in every way, shape, and form more fully than any other show has captured any other subject. Like you said, it can often be unfocused, but to me that's why I am so captivated by it. The food, the music, the Mardi Gras Indians, the repartee - just everything and anything this show touches absolutely leaps off the screen and envelopes me in a wonderful cocoon of aesthetic and sensory bliss.
I wouldn't say it's the greatest show ever, or even my favorite show ever, but I can't recall many others that leave me feeling so fulfilled after each episode. It's just really hard to adequately describe.
