Holy fuck. Phil really was recording an album all this time, not just growing a beard in a cabin somewhere, counting his sweet Kickstarter money.

I'm listening for the first time now, but I figure this would be a good place to collect thoughts for him as we all get it and go through it. I am 2.25 songs in (playing in the wrong order) and it's very, very good. Beatles and Beach Boys abound. Real live top-shelf strings float in and out. Tasteful little jazz guitar licks pop above ground like tulip bulbs in March, only to vanish again seconds later. For an album aiming for such great heights, there is an awful lot of restraint being shown here. I am guessing 22 yr old Phil wouldn't have known how to pull punches this well.

More as it develops.

Fuuuuuck, the solo on "If We COuldn't Count On Each Other." That must the guy you mentioned, the teacher / brother of famous guitarist guy? Sweet jesus. That alone was worth the price of admission.

I only got through the first three songs on my drive in to work this morning, but really enjoy what I've heard so far - especially "Angie."

Just got the email and am about to transfer the songs to my drive.
Are these the final mixes?

yes, but not mastered. Mastering shouldn't affect the final product in any drastic fashion.

I just settled up with Ken via his accountants.

Next step, mastering.

Still no word from the artist about album art.

Blah.

Thanks Ky and Bob, appreciate the kind words. Also, 22 year old me didn't know what refined taste was. I also enjoyed more new music. Hmmm.

At some point very soon, I'll be able to put Phil on my record player.

...

That's a neat thought.

Gave it a first spin and really, really dug it!
Love the arrangements. And the melodies are just gorgeous!
Usually takes a few spins for something to really settle in, but the first spin was a beaut! Nice work, sir!

This guy.

award winning classical composer, won winfield this past year, plays weddings, jazz duo gigs in steakhouses, rips the occasional rock guitar solo (did it in 1.5 takes. The first .5 was him saying, i need a chord chart), and is beyond convincing in any genre. Dude is a monster, and so is wife, but on piano.

Well, he nailed the "well schooled badass abandon" kind if solo I associate with Jellyfish, so he was up to the task.

Immediately after that first take he wanted to take it again, said he could do it better and that there were timing issues, and everyone in the control room flipped out trying to convince him that that was it.

We won.

Jesus, really?!

If there's one weakness of guys like that, who have such a schooley background, it's that they tend to drive all the good dirt out of the finished product unless you get them drunk or rush them and them cut them off.

I'll usually let them take one or two more passes, on separate tracks, just to see.
But, yeah, the first one usually is the best in situations like that.
