Okay, I spent a few minutes earlier today looking at just how many 2013 releases I heard, and the answer turns out to be 12. Or 13. Or something like that. Mostly familiar names. In fact, so mainstream that I must have gotten really, really old. Quickly ranked, I would sort them something like this:

1) Josh Ritter~ The Beast In Its Tracks- Let me put it this way: if Josh Ritter puts out a new album, it's almost a lead-pipe cinch that it's going to be my #1. He gets better every time.

2) Gurf Morlix~ Finds The Present Tense- I've only had this one about a month, and if Ritter hadn't put out a record in 2013...seriously, Gurf isn't a prolific performer, keeping busy with everything else in the industry that one could imagine, but when he does, it is stellar.

3) Guy Clark~ My Favorite Picture Of You- Guy's voice is showing a lot of wear on this one, but the song writing hasn't suffered a bit.

4) Waterboys~ An Evening With Mr. Yeats- A long-time wish of Mike Scott is realized, and in fine fashion.

5) Willie Nile~ American Ride- Willie lays down his finest set of tunes since Streets Of New York.

6) Garland Jeffreys~ Truth Serum~ Some blistering soul/blues/reggae infused tunes form a master. Hell of a band behind him on this one.

7) Daniel Romano~ Come Cry With Me- If you like your old-school Country Music, young Romano keeps doing it without a hint of irony.

8)Steve Earle~ Low Highway- It's good Steve Earle, and that's plenty good enough for me.

9) Eric Burdon~ 'Til Your river Runs Dry- Burdon's voice is as strong as it was 40 years ago, and the song set is very good.

10) The Handsome Family~Wilderness- Brett and Rennie do what only they do, effortlessly.

The Outlaw Country All Stars delivered this year - yet somehow this Steve Earle album failed to register with me.

I agree with your assessment of Willie Nile.

I listened to this a few times after it first came out and kind of wrote it off as being pretty mediocre. Whenever I hear a song come up randomly on an americana podcast or radio show though, I like it more than I expect to. I probably should give it another chance. Not sure if it's his best tunes since Street of New York or not, but that's not exactly a very high yardstick.
