“We’re about to put out a piece of art like nobody else has done in the history of [modern] music. We’re making a single-sale collector’s item. This is like somebody having the scepter of an Egyptian king.” - RZA

Quote:
According to RZA and the album’s main producer Tarik “Cilvaringz” Azzougarh, a Morocco-based part of Wu-Tang’s extended family, the plan is to first take Once Upon A Time In Shaolin on a “tour” through museums, galleries, festivals and the like. Just like a high-profile exhibit at a major institution, there will be a cost to attend, likely in the $30-$50 range.

Visitors will go through heavy security to ensure that recording devices aren’t smuggled in; as an extra precaution, they’ll likely have to listen to the 128-minute album’s 31 songs on headphones provided by the venue. As Cilvaringz puts it: “One leak of this thing nullifies the entire concept.”

Quote:
Once the album completes its excursion, Wu-Tang will make it available for purchase for a price “in the millions.”

I put the odds of this leaking at about 99%

as grandiose and cartoonish as this is, it's also admirably cool as fuck.

I love the concept behind it -- the idea that music is art and should be taken as such. But, at the same time, I can't help but smile and shake my head a little, knowing that pop music is an art for the masses. And this necessarily excludes large numbers.

Still… kudos for the idea and the effort.

So they want to charge people $30-50 dollars to listen to an album on headphones that you can't purchase? Good luck with that.

Sounds first and foremost like a cheap stunt to get people talking. I don't give it much credit beyond that, all claims to artsy aspirations to the contrary.

Lengthy vid, but they do show the package and actually play part of a Ghostface track on the album.

Yes, agreed.
But at the same time, it is saying something.
With so much music, so readily available for free, people are not thinking of music as art so much any more. So, cheap stunt or no, I think it's saying something and it's kinda cool.
Although I am not a huge Wu-Tang fan, so I'm not as frustrated by this as their hardcore fan base. It does kinda suck for them.

I haven't wanted to listen to a new album by them in years. No loss for me with this plan.

I wouldn't listen to their new album if they gave it to me.

Iron Flag was the last album I liked by them. I don't think I've even heard 8 Diagrams. I'm not holding out hope for this.

Do you mean you are not holding out hope you will be the winning bidder of it?

I love the fact that it's a CD.

Only thing better would have been a cassette. Like inside that gold box inside a gold box, there's a little plastic cassette. Or a VHS tape.

But then NOONE would be able to hear it.

A laserdisc. That would have been perfect.

I could probably bid $3.17 on it.
