I still love Mellow Gold, and perhaps I can still maybe possibly cling to the opinion that MG has higher highs than Odelay.

But, I just listened to these albums back-to-back on commutes this week. Odelay is superior, and for the longest time I had thought the reverse.

I dunno. Both are great. I love the slacker folk rock of Mellow Gold and Odelay just sounds like a more fully realized version from someone who had more time and money to spend in the studio.

I rarely listen to Odelay anymore. Just one of those records that I completely wore out at the time is now part of my subconscious.

I used to prefer Mellow Gold, but the last time I listened to Odelay, I came to this same decision, too. It's been several years since I've listened to either, though, and I have no desire to revisit them or listen to any Beck any time soon.

Also frog vomit > cat poo.

I used it as a launching point for Beck, but Odelay was the album that made be a believer.
Neither are as good as Mutations or Sea Change.

Mutations is the best hangover album ever.

Sea Change marked the point at which Beck started creating hollow, synthetic approximations of his own earlier music.

Sea Change is pretty boring. An excellent example of an artist maturing... for the worse.

I pretty much agree with this entire thread over the past few posts. Mutations holds up well, Odelay is fun. Sea Change just never clicked with me.

If Beck put out a greatest hits album, that'd be his best album.

Deny only because it got more overplayed (for me) than the other two combined.

I've always really liked "Lost Cause" off of Sea Change for some reason.

It's only a problem if they call out your name, that name being Beck, at inappropriate moments. And that's not so much illegal as just sorta awkward.

Also, saw Beck about a month ago and it was a great live show. Really hadn't listened to him much for quite some time, especially his older records and had forgotten just how many giant radio hits he had. A fun time was had by all and I didn't need to impersonate Beck to enjoy my evening, thankfully what with being about two of him, big and bald. I'd struggle to pull that one off. I was even able to forget about the whole Scientology thing for most of the show.

When I saw him in 1999 or so it was a ridiculously good show. Definitely more impressive than his studio work.

Or..Sea Change took the clusterfuck of his previous works and distilled it down into an album that is subtly solid.
Generally, I dislike the genre of music where Sea Change lies, but I think the composition of the album is rewarding for those that take some time to absorb it.

I was donating some stuff at the Thrifty Shopper and perused the cds they had for sale. Bought Sea Change for 2 bucks. You win, obner, you win.

this came on at work today, and it's impossible for me to not associate it with:

Beck
the movie Basquiat

and THIRD dylan. This amazes me.

fourth is Bob Weir.
