J.R. Robinson releases his latest LP as Wrekmeister Harmonies, Night of Your Ascension, today via Thrill Jockey, and along with the epic record comes a brand-new music video staring noise-rock legend David Yow. Wrekmeister is a project whose records are known for their dark, minimalist, hypnotic drones, but on Night of Your Ascension, Robinson's assembled a cast of more than 30 names from the heavy metal and experimental world—members of the Body, Cave, Corrections House, Bloodyminded, and Anatomy of Habit are among those involved—and together, during the course of a year, created a massive, monstrous racket. Today's 12 O'Clock Track is a tiny clip from the half-hour-long title track and its aforementioned accompanying video, which features the Jesus Lizard front man covered in grime and being a world-class creep. The cover of Joanna Newsom’s latest album, “Divers,” shows a hazy landscape that evokes, simultaneously, the bottom of the sea and the peak of a mountain. Craggy plants, with flowers in reds and whites, give way to dense clouds and a blue sky shining through. Like Newsom’s music, the image is disorienting, otherworldly, and enchanting in its mysteriousness. It is a photograph by the New York-based artist Kim Keever, who is known for crafting elaborate dioramas in an aquarium, then releasing pigments into the tank and taking pictures of the resulting underwater scenes. In October, Newsom told Vogue that when she first saw the image she had a fidgety feeling, as if from “drinking four cups of coffee.” “It’s like a storm that blew through,” she said. “It’s in the record now.” (Keever’s work is also featured in the music video for the album’s title song, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.)

Keever, who studied as an engineer and began his art career as a painter, has said that he draws inspiration from geology, botany, and from his own personal experiences of the natural world, seeking to create images that “sit between reality and artificiality.” He has cited the influence of his childhood on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, where he’d watch fiddler crabs march in waves along the beach by his house. That and other interactions with nature, he said, “were mind-bending experiences for me.” In addition to landscapes like the one adorning the Newsom album, Keever has made underwater series focussed on eroding mountains, birds, and a disintegrating “dog” carcass made with sticks and plaster. The images shown here, from his “Abstract” series, devote entire frames to conflagrations and billows of radiant paint.
