I think it's more than no one comes to Obner anymore.

I still listen to indie rock. I've heard the new Japandroids, Cloud Nothings, and Surfer Blood. They are all.... ok.

I've been on a big African kick recently. And diving deeper into MPB (Modern Brazilian Pop -- yes, I know the acronym is off).

I listen to a bit of African stuff but still know almost nothing. I've really enjoyed a lot of stuff I've heard from Mulatu Astatke. And the Awesome Tapes from Africa label has great stuff as does Analog Africa.

Been digging a late 2016 release from BROOKZILL!, a group with Prince Paul and others collaborating with some Brazillian musicians for a nice blend of hip hop and Brazilian music.

Also... this...

Josef Leimberg: Astral Progressions

Modern astral jazz hip hop fusion stuff. If you liked Kamasi Washington's The Epic, he's featured on this one and you'll probably dig it too.

Beverley Road All Stars - Murder She Wrote

Just picked up this 45 and loving it, adaptation of an old Chaka Demus & Pliers song.

The Shins - Heartworms : Granted I haven't paid much attention to them as of late, but this new one did very little for me. I love the oldiescore flavor of the title track. I wish the rest of the album was like that. Unfortunately not.

So has that great run of Spoon albums come to an end?

I know they are trying to develop their sound a little with each album but this seems very flabby, no edge at all. Even Britt's vocals seem lost in over production.

I am incredibly tired and in an incredibly bad mood so maybe I need to come back to it in better days....

I guess I was in a receptive mood, because I enjoyed it, for the most part. I still like Transference the least, though some of the songs on that have grown on me over the years. I haven't LOVED a Spoon album since Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. This one is about on par with They Want My Soul - good, but not great.

On my third listen and this still sounds well short of the last three albums which were all great and a progression on each other. There are some good songs but it sounds a bit wet, lacking punch, tired. When the instrumental tracks are in the top half best songs on the album then you have to start thinking there is a fair amount of filler on there.

To me this sounds like a mediocre album by a great band. The ideas are there in the background but they just don't come alive.

To put my current level of Spoon-based enthusiasm in perspective, I was MUCH, MUCH more excited about the new Real Estate album being released on that same day. I still really like Spoon, but my fanaticism has waned somewhat over the years.
