I'm moving to Saskatoon in a month and I'm driving the full 1,880 miles (3,025 kilometers) by myself. I'm starting to prep some mixes for the trip right now. I'm looking for some good road songs for travelling, pretty much anything goes, I'm easy and open-minded. Stuff that has suited you for really long road trips. Anything fun and interesting that will keep me occupied and aware so I can keep awake and not get killed by moose around Lake Superior. Any suggestions?

The 'Gwai's good driving music if you're awake...and even if you're not. I'd go with the latest (government commissions)..

I've never heard this, I've got Rock Action. I like it, don't love it, but I should it give it another listen.

any good canadian road trip mix has to have at least 3 tragically hip songs. that is the non negotiable minimum.

Indeed, I've just got to find the right mix. I figure when I'm heading through the Soo, I ought to play 'Born in the Water' and then once I hit Winnipeg I'll fire up 'At the Hundredth Meridian' and once I break SK, then I'll cue up 'Wheat Kings'. However, between each of those songs, there's roughly 800+ kms, so I've got to fill up something. Ontario is a damn big province.

That's the stuff. Obviously I've got to hear some Neil through Ontario, particularly once I'm 100 km past Sudbury.

driving south - jimi hendrix

though it doesn't sound like you'll be headed that direction.

It all works, but I'm heading northwest from my current vantage point. Canada really begins about 300 kms from where I am.

mercury rev - goddess on a hiway
my bloody valentine - drive it all over me
oranger - sorry paul
oranger - a view of the city from an airplane
pixies - here comes your man
sonic youth - skip tracer
spoon - all the pretty girls go to the city
stereolab - metronomic underground
swervedriver - expressway
toshack highway - the streets that spin off
the verve - star sail
ween - roses are free

Just find a copy of 'Fully Completely' and keep that handy.

Also, the Lowest of The Low's Shakespeare is a necessity.

I've got them both handy, especially the latter. I've got to mix all this up.

It truly is a brutal stretch of highway, I think it's nearly 4 lanes to Parry Sound now.

Have you graced its presence lately? It's been awhile. I'm hoping to beat the construction. I'm stopping in Sudbury for a pit stop, then it's off for 300 km of nothing! You just can't beat 17.

I was last up that way in August of 2003, and the 4 lanes made it close to, but not all the way to Parry Sound. There was a lot more highway that was built, but not open, so it's possible they've made it a little further.

(I used to drive from Buffalo to Wawa every summer to fish.)

You gotta play Neil Young's Long May You Run when you get to Blind River, along 17 between Sudbury and the Soo.

This stretch of road is even more boring than 69.

You went to Wawa to fish?!! That's a helluva a trip, man. The Sudbury-Wawa stretch is hideous.
