Last night at rehearsal, my amp (a 30-watt Peavey Delta Blues w/ a single 15" speaker), had a definite reduction in volume and the tone was kinda farty.

It's 11 years old, or so and has never had the tubes changed; I'm thinking that might be the problem.

So, those of you in the know... what are some good brands. Ones with good power and sweet tone. I love the way my amp sounds and don't want to fuck it up with crappy tubes.

BTW: My local shop gave me an estimate of approx. $125, including labor, and depending upon the price of the tubes. Sounded fair to me. Sound fair to you?

(Includes four EL84 power tubes; not preamp tubes, which would be three 12AX7s.)

Equipment geeks, you got some advice for me?

Keep bumping this until Kyle (Cap'n Squirgle) sees it Todd. He is the dark overlord of all things Tube.

Yes, yes I do. The range of possibilities goes from Sovteks at the lower end to EH (electro harmonix) in the middle range, all the way up to N.O.S. (new old stock) Mullards at the top. But if you spend what Mullards are worth and put them in a Peavey, I'll have to kill you for your own good, no offense to the amp.

The best tube source I know of is www.thetubestore.com, which is great for both price and service. They also have reviews of tubes (major geek alert) which will help you. A matched pair of EL84's from electro harmonix is $19.95 plus shipping, so figure $50 delivered. The other $75 the guy was gonna charge you was largely profit, because those tubes simply pull out and plug in, observing pin alignment. The only possible other labor involved would be biasing the amp towards those new tubes, but if you email them at thetubestore (or call, much quicker) and ask about it, I'm 95% sure they'll say you don't need to re-bias if you get the right pair (voiced the same as current pair), which they could verify.

Don't spend $125.
