There was a great segment on The Prairie Home Companion this morning 'arguing' that born-agains are actually citizens of heaven and not of this mortal plane and therefore should be banned from voting in earthly elections. It was funny and tongue-in-cheek and they'd never be serious about it, but you could tell they weren't too happy about someone's insane religion affecting the choice of the leader of the world.

Here's some born again Christians on Bush (Sr. not Jr.). These are actually pretty simplistic lyrics compared to what these guys normally write. But they are still pretty straight to the point....

Bush League
By The Lost Dogs
from the album "Scenic Routes"
(Music by Gene Eugene, Lyrics by Gene Eugene and Terry Taylor)

1,2,3,4
I don't know what I think about it
But I know what I think of you
Well I know I can live without it
And I know what I want to do

I'll pack you a lunch, clear your desk
It's going to be hell to clean your mess
All I know is that you gotta go

I don't know what I think about it
But your bush league days are through
Will you give me a job I doubt it
Here's a bird in the hand for you

Next time you start a storm
You better get you a mess kit, canteen and uniform
Cause we feel like livin'
So you've got to go

Your points of light are almost gone
So here's your yellow ribbon-burning song

For Millie and Danny and Saddam and nanny
Babs and Ronnie and Clyde and Bonnie
Clarence and Ollie and the Beave and Wally
And Maggie and Gorby and the new world ordey

To max and kabob.

Are you two suggesting that your votes are decided by something other than your beliefs and personal moral convictions?

Also, I may have some social awkwardness and be a little on the weird side, but I highly doubt anyone who knows me, christian or not, would insinuate that I am insane or claim that my belief system contributes to a questionable sanity.

I'm just reporting a funny skit on the radio from this morning.

Buuuut, I think the atheists and agnostics among us are angry/frightened by the amount of influence fundamentalism, not just run of the mill religion, had on this election. Quotes like, "this election was all about abortion for me," only frustrate the other side to the point of collapse.

Bashing on religion may or may not be fair, but the fundamentalists in any religion deserve all the verbal beatings they get.

Yeah I agree. It's a bitter pill for me to swallow though unfortunately, since my parents lean more towards the fundamentalist side of Christianity but are good people. At the same time I have a hard time listening to them sometimes when they talk about certian issues. But that's chaos for you.

I think a lot of Christians who had to live through that whole era of being tortured/fed to lions by the Romans would be alarmed at the way a lot of fundamentalists act today. Cause they knew very well that it's enough of a privelege to be able to be a Christian without getting arrested.

Yes, I heard that last night, which made me think of the eightteen years thing. My comment was intended to be humorous.

I didn't mean to offend anyone, Hegel.

I was not offended. I suppose my issue comes in when you are apparently lumping fundamentalists into one group and calling them christians.....using the term "born-agains".

I probably should have just kept out of the thread.

And, if I may ask. what was the election about for you guys? If someone says the election was over the issue of abortion and you can't understand it, do you have the same response when someone says that their vote was determined by their support of lack thereof for the war in Iraq? I feel like issues are what have to determine an election. For some, like myself, choosing the lesser of two evils was not a possibility. I will probably get railed for this admission, but I did not vote. I could not, in good conscience vote either one of those people into office. So, when the imminent spiral of this country into the seventh circle of Dante's Hell finally occurs, the blood won't be on my hands.(note:that last sentence is intended for humor's sake).

I guess I have a problem with anyone who votes based on one issue, whether it be abortion, gun control, the environment, etc. People should take more into account when casting ballots. It seems to me that there are a lot of religious votes that are cast only because of the abortion issue, or because they were told how to vote at church. I suppose this happens in any group situation, i.e. unions, environmental protection groups, they all give their members advice on how to vote.
