Not really, but "Laika" is number 30 on the UK singles chart this week.

"According to the British Phonographic Industry's figures on trade deliveries to retail stores, 80.1 million singles were sold in Britain in 1999, but by 2003 the number had fallen to 36.1 million."

OK, mmm, No.30 for one week....where's my calculator.....ah....what's that...oh no subtract there....yes...that's it....about 14 copies sold. Sell outs!

[shivering, huddling, crouching, glancing from side to side] Wait a minute! The top two are Elvis and Tony Christie! It's 2005 right? Please say it is because I'm very frightened right now. I think I may have inadvertently fallen into a cosmic wormhole or something while I was making my toast. [/shivering, huddling, crouching, glancing from side to side]

No, number 1 usually sells about 5-6 thousand a week. Number 30 is probably a couple hundred (just guessing).

Actually I believe the Elvis track sold 21,000 copies to get to No.1 - the lowest total ever. UK singles used to have to selll over a 100,000 copies a week to get to the top spot. Imagine that!

I thought Badly Drawn Boy said 5000 when I saw him (he was trying to push "You Were Right" to get it number 1 for a week... didn't work). Maybe it was 25,000. I dunno.

Mr. K is never wrong. Now recalculate your response with that in mind.
