What're the best albums which are old (or cool) enough to be picked up on the cheap either used or new? Tryin to get off the downloading bug.

That's great and all, thanks for the link. I was more looking for opinions on what to check out that wouldn't cost me 15+ bucks.

First of all, Davel, welcome to Obner -- tell us more about you in the Introductions Forum, if you would.

And secondly, what sort of music are you looking for?

I had The Who Sell Out ordered in to my store for me and the cost was $6.30 Canadian.

Thanks :)

Sorry for not introducing myself, I always found intros annoying so I passed. I'll go and do it since people read em here.

Anyways, I was just looking for good some rock, pop, or electronic that is inexpensive to pick up. Anything along those lines or close would be great.

You can pick up pretty much the entire Grant Lee Buffalo catalog for ten bucks at most used stores I've seen.

I don't know if that appeals to anyone, but that's some truly underrated stuff.

Pitchfork had a "best used bin finds" list, but I can't find it. The one that surprised me (in a good way, as I'm a fan) was Sugar's File Under: Easy Listening.

No need for that but yes, own the very best ones.

Here is this boards Top 100 Albums of all time. Yes we mainly come from the CJM board. If you can find any of these, fairly cheap, than you should be OK. Not knowing what you are into this is as good as reference as anything else.

If one is a Neil Young fan, you can pick up most of his earliest and best at ridiculously cheap prices.

Everybody Knows This is Nowhere and After the Gold Rush both retail for about $6-7 Cdn. Most of his entire 70s catalogue can be picked up for a around $12.

I also bought Joni Mitchell's Blue and Court and Spark for around $10 apiece not too long ago.

I was going to suggest Sugar. I found File Under Easy Listening for $3 in California, and they had a bunch of them. I also picked up a couple of EP's for $2 each.
Score.

This is always the CD I think of when it comes to good , used CDs you can find all over the place. You can actually find it for $.49 at Secondspin.com

Here are some other finds at secondspin for under a buck:

Ass Ponys -- Electric Rock Music
Murray Attaway -- In Thrall
Bare, Jr. -- Boo-Tay
the Connells -- Weird food & Devastation and Still Life
Getaway People -- Turnpike Diaries
God Street Wine -- $1.99 Romances

and that's just A through G at $1 or under...

[total record-store nerd comment]

I noticed recently that the Ninja Tune back catalog has dropped pretty significantly in price, (at least in Canada).

For example, the lovely and talented :

Used to be somewhere in the $26.00 range and now it's about $15.00.... resulting in me finally picking it up yesterday.

<--- waited 10 years to pick that puppy up.

There are also quite a lot of old albums that have very low cost prices, e.g. The Stooges self-titled, the Velvet Underground's "Banana" album.

Another good way to save money is to completely swear-off any releases by SoulJazz.

Seconded. You can also find the b-sides album (cleverly titled Besides) WITH the live bonus disc quite often, or at least I do. And yes, the bonus live disc IS worth seeking out.

If you want some good stuff cheap, get a turntable.

You can pick up just about any 80s albums that were in decent circulation for 5 bucks or less, 70s stuff that's not rare about the same.

When you get older and/or rare and collectible, you have to pay, or if you want fancy audiophile stuff, but for general run-of-the mill records from the 70s and 80s, you can get tons of stuff for cheap on vinyl.
