A topic more for you music collectors out there. Those who are constantly on the lookout for great rare/expensive/out of print stuff.

Inspired by a comment Billzebub made in the "Classic records you should have..." topic

What albums, 45's, whatever... have you been on the lookout for the longest time. I'm talkin' searches that have been quest like-The Holy Grail- yet have eluded you?

I'd be interested just out of curiosity.

Steve

an album by Trusty that my husband used to play on his radio show. He only had a cassette demo copy, and I've yet to find the album (vinyl or cd) anywhere.

More specifically: I'm looking for a clearer version of the song "Bitter" which he used to open his show with.

Debut Raincoats, Captain Beefheart- Lick my decals off baby, Starsailor by Tim Buckley.

All end up being around $80 for CD's, I look in used record stores hoping the person doesn't know what they have & price them normally.

I'm on the lookout for the following

X: "Adult Books" on Dangerhouse
The Saints: "I'm Stranded" on Fatal
Radio Birdman: "New Race" on Trafalgar

those are the big three, right now.

Somebody posted Starsailor on hear as part of the OOP series. I have it. It is TERRIBLE.

I've been looking for Cornershop's Elvis Sex-Change for over half a decade now. Incidently, the guy who runs a great local record shop told me last Friday it was being reissued by Wiiija and that he'd let me know when they got it in (I'm skeptical cos I havent heard ANYTHING about this, but he's a knowledgable cat so I'm awaiting his phone call).

also the Breeders Head to Toe 7" from '94 (I would kill for this), the Dressy Bessy/Saloon tour split, Saturday Looks Good...Alcohol 7".

the one I looked for the longest though and actually found was Smashing Pumpkins Peel Sessions. I dont know why, but it took me forever to find that--almost 8 years.

You sir are wrong. Not that its something that screams LOOGAR to me, but not everything has to sound mongering.

I was looking for years for Marcos Valle's "Garra" which sells for $40-50 even when you can find it. A lot of places list it but usually they don't really have it in stock. I ordered it several times only to have different stores tell me a month and half later that its still on back order. I almost bought it once from a guy in Argentina on their version of ebay until I realized how expensive it was going to be after adding postage and wire fees, how much faith I was placing in this guy to honor my order and in the S. American mail system to get it to me, and realized that since i already have it in mp3 form that I'd be spending all this money for liner notes that would be in either Portuguese or Japanese.

I've picked up a lot of the things I've been looking for (OOP Curtis Mayfields, International Submarine Band (which has since been reissued), a lot of brazilian stuff, etc). Most of the rarities I want now have never been released on CD (Stuff like Our Daughters Wedding, Brigith Engelberts, and a lot of classic Bossa Nova and Brazilian Soul albums). I don't buy vinyl so I don't spend that much time looking anymore.

I am looking forward to the Bill Fay reissues end of the month in US. Those were on my shopping list for the past few years but were pretty expensive.

np: Sekouba Bambino "Ambiance Ballon"

I was looking for Tom Verlaine's Dreamtime for several years before finding it in a mall for $6 last year.

I agree, and I listen to a lot of stuff that is non-mongerous. But that rekkid is damn near unlistenable.

Yikes bro- gotta disagree there. I won't play my vinyl anymore as I don't want it to get any more torn up than it already is.

No, I was totally plussed about receiving it - just a tad disappointed that it didn't live up to the 30 years of expectations.

So, you weren't shocked when you recieved it?

One of the most commonly misused phrases in the English language.

Non plussed means shocked, not dissapointed or meh.

Well, sort of. To be nonplussed is to be bewildered or perplexed, which is neither shocked nor disappointed, and not so much meh as huh?.

Well spank my ass and call my Charlie, so it's not quite the usage I was seeking, substitute "jazzed".

edit: blame your shoddy American public school system for teaching me the incorrect usage in 10th grade--old RPK could put Teddy K under the table, never shoud've trusted anything outta that drunk.

Good thread topic.

I've passed up a lot of things and regretted it later such as...

The original cover of GNR's Appetite For Destruction on vinyl. It's so cool looking...

Def Leppard's First Strike LP that was soon recalled and destroyed by a legal ruling. It's just a bunch of sub-par demo tunes that never made it onto any of their albums but I shoulda bought it for a couple of dollars. I think its pretty rare.

That first Pearl Jam cd single pressing which is worth something now...though I've never actually liked Pearl Jam at all.

Stuff that I'm still looking for but don't expect to find anytime soon:

Kiss - The Creatures Of The Night (original cover) on CD
Dive - Mighty Force (An industrial/dance band on the Earache label in the early 90's). I have an awesome cd single but never found the full-length.
Finitribe - Unexpected Groovy Treat
Curve - Has a bunch of rare, OOP stuff that I wouldn't mind having.
2001: A Space Odyssey on CD...

Hmm. I know there are lots of others too...lemme think about this.

brooklyn express - "burning hot" 12"
zombies - odessey & oracle LP
kinks - village green preservation society LP (not the re-issue)
r dean taylor - "there's a ghost in my house" 7"
jackson c frank - blues run the game LP
pulp - second class & the sisters EP (any format)
sparks - kimono my house LP

and yes, the format is just as important as the music for some of these.

But I know I'll be hunting high and low
high -
There's no end to the lengths I'll go to
hunting high and low
high -
There's no end to the lengths I'll go to find her again.

Upon this my dreams are depending through the dark

I sense the pounding of her heart next to mine.
She's the sweetest love I could find

So I guess I'll be hunting high and low
high -
There's no end to the lengths I'll go to
high and low
high -

Cause if that's the case, the song is Bitter, by Certain Distant Suns, released on Giant.

Just a shot in the dark, Dana.

Trouble's album on Def American on cd. It's going for like $60-70 on amazon/ebay. I have the cassette but I want the cd. I also have the cassette of the Geto Boys Def American release.

A bunch of old heavy metal and hip hop albums that I'd like to get. Icon, Juggernaut's 2nd album, Superlover Cee & Casanova Rud, Rough Cutt, Poor Righteous Teachers. I'm not sure about the metal ones though, a few that I've gotten this year haven't withstood the test of time.

Orbit's unreleased 2nd album for A&M. I talked to the drummer a few months ago and he said he'd send me a copy but I haven't gotten nothing yet.
