whenever you start thinking things aren't going well, you can say "At least I'm not that dude?"

Not in a "he's got cancer, and his mom died and his dog got hit by a car" kind of way, but more in "Why the fuck does he keep doing this shit," kind of way.

Hell, I might be that guy for some of my friends, but I just got off the phone with a work associate, who has been trying to get a job in DC for pretty close to 3 years. Had an interview with a PR shop the other day. The interviewer said he was going to try to make a decision by Friday, but that it might take two weeks. My friend then told the interviewer if it was going to take two weeks to just take his name out of the running.

Now, my friend is in the same boat I was, could come back to this company, is talking to a few campaigns around the country, but what he really wants to do is work in DC, and he pretty much just blew it.

Like my dad always says, "You can't people who won't help themselves"

I have a friend who hasn't had a real job in about 4 years. I don't know what the hell you do with a resume with gaps like that.

Sometimes, but after about 6 months of their drama, I don't consider them a "friend" anymore. I draw the line at toxic relationships.

Usually I still hear about these people through others who choose to keep them as friends, but I don't waste too much energy thinking about them or their respective life woes. Like you said, you can't help people who won't help themselves.

I am constantly amazed by the number of women I know who remain in abusive or otherwise unhealthy relationships with men.

i have a friend who's a little preoccupied with seeming normal. he's also a wee homophobic. once we met up with some friends at what was rumored as a gay bar (at least on certain nites) and he showed up in his Colorado Avalanche jersey. (AKA, i watch sports, i'm a man who likes sports and women like what you see on commercials.)

A friend of mine graduated from UNC last May and has done very little in the way of looking for a job. I think he has thought about grad school, but basically right now he goes out in Chapel Hill or Raleigh nearly every night.

I'm 45 and completely unemployable, haven't held a 9-5 job since I was 24, and I'm constantly skittering around the edge of financial oblivion. In the eyes of my non-artist friends and relatives I'm totally the at-least-I'm-not-that-guy guy.

But see, this dude is actively searching for jobs, and keeps fucking it up by being weird and or doing things like taking himself out of the running for jobs that his DAD got him interviews for.

I mean, I should be unemployable. Look what I do all day...it helps to be a silvertongued devil who can write fairly well and works good under pressure/on deadline.

I think I know who you're talking about and what you're saying is he pulled a horribly botched bluff? Just when I think he's qual he goes completely gar.

i had a friend that was "that guy" but he eventually turned it around, much to my self-esteem's chagrin. our other candidate is more a product of apathy than self-destruction, which is far less interesting. i suppose that for much of my life I was that guy but i am no longer.

Yeah, you and chris know him, and he wasn't even bluffing. He was just like, "if it's gonna take that long, take me out of the running."

He told me that he had to make a decision on what to do, and that 2 weeks was too long in his timeframe.

Still a good friend, and someone who I will always wish the best for, but it can be frustrating when people constantly fuck up.

It's easier to be friends with sorry muthafuckas, cos they never get your hopes up.

Yeah, I just sent an email to that guy. Maybe things have changed!

Supposedly the last 'that guy' has pulled his shit somewhat together in the last three or four years, after ten of wallowing in it.

but yo uknow how much my evening jello means to me....and plus anything to take me away from "Gee, I wonder what Rob Thomas is doing right now". "Do you think Rob Thomas buys his own coffee, or has it delivered?" "I wonder if Rob Thomas is listening to Rogue Wave right now like I am?"....

I mean enough is enough!

I have a friend like this from university; it took him 7 years to finish undergrad because "it's a total rush to skip a final exam worth 60% of yr final mark". Also is incapable of completely finishing a project in his current lab as he hasn't published a paper in nearly 5 years. That's scientific suicide. He's the "You can't fail me, I'll fail myself" type.

Not really. I mean I used to sorta be that person. Mostly because of some bad choices and a strange family.

Now I'm happy, adjusted, and quite frankly, boring as all hell. My only drama is the fact that I work for twins and one of em is nuts and makes me want to scream all the time, otherwise, meh.

Although I DID have a friend who was very much a fair weather friend, she was miserable in her life and seemed to get joy out of other people's misery, especially mine. To the point where she'd make me feel much worse about situations(when I was getting divorced she was absolutely evil to me) When we finally stopped being friends many of my friends who'd met her, and my whole family, asked what took me so long.

Oh, man, this happened to me a couple of years ago. Same deal-- friend was horribly selfish, none of my other friends or family liked her, and then I finally saw the light. Too bad I wasted 3 years on our friendship. Oh, well, live and learn, I guess.

I just went through this whole ordeal with my EX best-friend. After being friends with her for so long, and seeing the devil rise through her, I don't know why I stuck around. Even after seeing her screw a lot of our close friends over... so she basically moved to SF to "be independent" when in reality, her dad is STILL paying her rent after she graduated and she's working at Diesel (first real job ever at 23 yrs. old) where she spends all her money shopping. I normally don't tolerate selfish, arrogant people like her, but why I became friends with her, now I wonder.

She's "that" person too. Her dad basically finds her jobs and interviews in the field she graduated from, and she fucks it up because she doesn't want to face real life yet. I feel sorry for her when reality does kick in and she's fucked so many people over that she'll be all by herself.
