The Delgados Mailing List Wrote:
The Delgados, influential figures in Glasgow's independent music scene
for over 10 years, have announced that they are to amicably disband.
The reason has been put down to the departure of their bass player
Stewart Henderson who informed the band in the New Year that he did not wish
to make another album. The Delgados have always been known as uniquely
collaborative songwriters and as such, it was decided that the band
could not continue without all of its original members.

The Delgados leave behind them 5 critically acclaimed albums including
The Great Eastern, Hate and last year's Universal Audio. Their two
principal songwriters Emma Pollock and Alun Woodward will be pursuing
individual projects and drummer Paul Savage will continue production duties
at the band's Chem19 Studios in Hamilton.

The four friends will continue to run their record label Chemikal
Underground in this, its 10th Anniversary year, with releases scheduled for
Malcolm Middleton, Mother & The Addicts and Arab Strap. They are
extremely grateful to everyone who has supported The Delgados over the
course of their career.

Hate and UA don't get enough love 'round these parts. That's shitty news. Never saw them live.

they were AWESOME live, and i don't think that i throw that around lightly. i loved this band, but i'm a big fan of the "amicable break-up on top" rather than the crap record/disaster ending.

True - I'd been wondering when there'd be a new Arab Strap album coming out...

Still, to be breaking up off of "Hate"....saddening.

I really liked Hate and Great Eastern, but couldn't ever get into the new album. Don't really know why.

Regardless, they're very good. Sad to hear it.

damn shame. they were a fine band, and very talented.

Hate is a fantastic record, but i'm with tthorn, the latest album never did anything for me.

i saw them twice last year after being a fan since great eastern. one night was awful and the other night was grand. i still don't have universal audio, but it's on my list. maybe i'll go pick it up today. i'll miss knowing they're around, but yeah, it's good to know they won't end up churning out tripe and fading. too few bands go out on top.

I've never heard anything by them. Allmusic compares them to bands as varied as Belle & Sebastien, Mogwai and Mercury Rev. What do they sound like? Can anyone give me an "if you like "X", you'll like The Delgados"? Is "Hate" the consensus starting point?

Tanx.

well, i guess they're compared to mogwai because they're scottish and have shared a label in the past, but they're closer to belle & sebastian. their usual producer, dave fridmann, has worked with mercury rev and the flaming lips, which is probably why allmusic lumps the delgados in with them.

i'd start with great eastern and move forward from there, even though peloton is pretty good too.

I'll second chase's awesome live---saw them for the first (and apparently last) time on this last tour for UA and found them to be unbelievably good.

Weird--I brought UA with me to play at work today, before hearing this news.

The Great Eastern is still my favorite Delgado's album--I'd start there.

they're much richer than belle & sebastian.
this is a drag but like z said, it's better than churning out crap.
hate is my favorite.

I'm now carry the terrrible burden of being Motherwell's sole cultural light!

Shame, but as Chase said at least they didn't go shitty.

It baffles me that no one ever mentions 'Peloton' which is a excellent LP, my second favourite of all their albums (Great Eastern being first).

Now I am sad! I actually just got UA, and haven't listened to it enough, but I do like what I've heard. Great Eastern is going to be my favorite though, and then Peloton.

If you cull the good 'uns from Hate & UA you get a good comp, don't know much about Great Eastern but I'm gonna keep an ear out for that Emma voice wheresoever it may turn up.

Damn!

There are very few bands where you have to vocals between a boy and girl, Alun Woodward and Emma Pollck, work so well. With them I never felt like I liked one over the other and never needed to skip songs to get to the one preferred.

I also like The Great Eastern best. I was shopping at Mod Lang Records in Berkeley and the guy, who I knew, asked me if I was seeing the Delgados that night. I said no because I have never heard of them but am seeing Badly Drawn Boy. They didn’t have it used but went to Amoeba Berkeley next and found a copy of TGE. I never did get around to seeing them live however.

I have since gone back and bought the two previous used, at Amoeba again, but have rarely played them. I remember not really liking the debut and because of that have probably skipped over Peloton as a result. Or maybe I was just uses to the Delgados with that Dave Fridmann production with TGE and Hate. I liked their pop album Universal Audio but took a bit longer to get into than the pervious two did.

Sad news indeed and thanks Chase for the info.
