and the tacoma I drive is certainly not small. However, I was scared for my life today driving home. I was caught, on a 6 lane highway, between a pack of probably 8 SUV's, most either Escalade's or Expeditions. For a full 360 degrees, I could not see what my surroundings were. I just kept thinking, "my god, they're huge". I also recollected my friend's continual usage of a phrase every time he sees an enormous Hummer or Escalade. It goes, "Nice tank, asshole".

I don't like them, not because they are bad for the environment, but because they block virtually every traffic scenario from view. It is dane-ger-us.

You guys have seen this, right? http://www.fuh2.com/

Check out the submissions. I'm in there somewhere (the finger, not the Hummer).

More importantly, I'll bet those large SUV drivers have terrible taste in music.

I have to rent cars all the time for work. Sometimes, they give me gigantic fucking SUVs. When I filled up a Durango, it cost me fifty five dollars to fill the tank. My Mazda would have got me the same distance on half the money.

I will confess though. I was sporting quite the chubby sitting up two feet higher than others driving down I-70.

Yep. Though I don't like them because they are bad for the enviornment as well. Today in the Costco parking lot was a GIANT pickup truck. It was so long it went into a second space. And Costco parking spaces are big (these ones, anyway). NO ONE needs a car that big. Especially not someone who drives in the city. It's one thing that pisses me off every time. I dream of the day when small cars are as ubiquitious in the US as they are in Europe.

Bad news. SUV's are becoming more and more popular especially with women drivers.

As for me I hate all cars with a passion.

I ride my bike as much as I can for basic transportation but down here in the old south, roads aren't always bike friendly. Drivers aren't always bike friendly either so I drive my car for most things out of general concern for my life.

Actually, SUVs are getting more popular in Europe, and a lot of Europeans are pissed off. In some cities, they are considering legislation to ban or curb the proliferation of SUVs.

I don't like SUVs because I like the environment. And in sf, it's retarded for someone to own a hummer. I understand if you need some sort of truck for your job, but hummers are simply unnecessary in this city.

I'll defend my SUV. First of all, I owned an SUV BEFORE it became some sort of fashion accessory (my first was an 1988 Toyota 4-Runner...more truck than SUV). I bought it cuz I wanted to use it for 4x'ing (trust me, it was used plenty for it!). After it was sadly destroyed in a car accident, I started shopping around for a new vehicle. And while I truly wanted a BMW Mini, reality set in and made me realize that carting a wheelchair (mom's disabled) in that mofo was not gonna fly. So, I bought a Nissan Xterra to allow for the ease of storing a wheelchair. It's a 4 cylinder (non 4x4, only cuz I don't have much time for that anymore) for gas saving purposes. I love my little truck. And now that my mom has a new electric wheelchair, the room in back is perfect for it.

I don't understand "luxury SUVs" or big ass SUVs that women drive. My best friend and husband own a Suburban AND an Expedition. Why? "Cuz it's safer." Really? SUVs are more prone to rolling over than any other vehicle and if you don't know how to drive one properly, you're screwed. Her husband is unemployed and she works about 5 miles from home. I don't get it.

I am with you here Tania. I drive a Toyota Tacoma. I think I justify having mine and enjoying mine because I know that, yes, maybe to a civcic or prelude driver I will block the view, but for the most part I am a medium size truck and don't get in people's way. Plus, I don't feel like because I drive this truck that I can change lanes whenever I want without even looking. I hate it when them Expeditions and such just do that. I have been in my mom's Escalade(yes, my mom drives an escalade) when she decided to just pull out on to the road to make a left turn. She stopped in the middle of oncoming traffic and literally said, "they'll stop". My jaw dropped. I was shocked.

statistics show that wagons are becoming the trend.
see the introduction of: Mazda 6 wagon, Audi A4 wagon, Ford Freestar ect... although some of these on the market are just as gas consuming as an SUV.

and in Canada, smaller cars have taken a huge part of market share. there's hope:

Smart Car, BMW's Mini, Toyota Echo Hatch, GM has a new range of tiny cheap cars, which i think aren't in the US yet.

I don't know if anybody else has noticed this but I have noticed what appears to be a direct correlation between the size of an SUV and the size of the Soccer Mom driving it. I always seem to see the tiniest soccer moms driving the biggest SUVs.....Ford Excursions usually

In the spirit of the thread, check out the Ford Escape hybrid - it's supposed to have some pep for a hybrid and very low emissions. Plus it costs way more!

Ohhhhhhh yeah.

There's also a correlation between SUV size & the lack of attention behind the wheel. I guess they figure they're safe, & that's all that matters.

I'm really not into cars at all... but I don't see why people don't just buy small but powerful cars like the Subaru Forrester.

Image

It rocks.

Why do people need such a damn huge cars?
It's already bad enough that people who own normal sized cars are often the only passenger at a time.

My Mother has an Impreza; it's small but it totally kicks ass--it just glides over snow-covered dirt roads in the country. It's wicked.
