another highly praised band that i've never looked into.
where do i start? there seem to be a ton of singles collections, peel sessions, albums...is there one that is "the essential starter" for diving in?

Billzebub is the guy to ask, but as I recall he had this one on his Listmania:

The Wedding Present George Best

i was leaning towards george best if no one replied, just because i love that album cover.

i'll remember all 3 of these, because chances are the cd shop won't have much.

Just grab 1 of the first four:

Georges Best, Bizarro, Seamonsters, or Watusi

All great. Seamonsters is my favorite but you won't likely find a consensus on ranking any of the first four.

Georges Best = jangly punk

Bizarro/Seamonsters = heavy discordant

Watusi = fast & poppy (I think the strokes rip this album off big time)

And by one, Radcliffe means Billz had Georges Best as his #1 on his listmania not just that it was one of the 100.

Thanks billy g. Number one on his Listmania. A controversial pick, but that's what made Billz' list Billz' list.

George Best
Bizarro

Those are the two i currently own and George Best is the reason i like them.

"everyone thinks he looks daft" is a mix staple and one of my favorite songs.

I need to buy a bunch of Wedding Present stuff by the way.

I'd stick to the registry, if you're a beginner, you could end up getting them something, they'll just return later.

Um, the band- I have no idea.

Have it in there at #1. The only album ever made that's better than Funhouse.

I also recommend Saturnalia, the last thing they did before Cinerama. I don't think it gets much respect, but I find it to be wonderful.

The only one I've heard is the new one. And I didn't like it. How do you wedding present fans feel about the new album? Is there a different album I should start on, or if I don't like the new one, is it most likely that I won't like their other stuff?

I've enjoyed 'Always The Quiet One' enough to put on several mixes - it's a pretty tune and highly reminiscent of some early-90s radio-friendly track I can't quite put my finger on. I've not purchased Take Fountain yet, but it's high on my wish list. I'll return after a couple proper turns.

I'm not a big fan of Watusi, but the other early albums are all pretty damn terrific. I enjoy the others, but not as much as the early stuff.

I assume you were questioning the strokes rip off part of my post. I phrased that lazily....but the similarities are uncanny.

I submit Shake It from Watusi which came out in 1994 as evidence.

Surprised no one's posted about the show yet. They were pretty great. Played lots from Seamonsters and Bizzarro which was nice. Didn't see anyone else from Obner not that I would really recognize anyone but Tania.

Wow, no kidding. Right down to the bullhorn vocal effect. I mean, the Strokes are tighter and their hooks a bit more compelling, but I definitely see iit.

They were pretty great, better than I expected. What all was there from Bizarro? I only remember Kennedy and What Have I Said Now? myself. Gedge is rocking it at 45, and the new songs were pretty good--I may have to get that album.

You weren't the crazy fighting shouting guy ('play suck, motherfucker!' repeat ad nauseum) who got tossed out, were you? ;)

Ha ha...no I would have been yelling for corduroy or brassneck.

I guess they only played those two from Bizzarro but hey that's 20% of the album :)

I only counted one each from Saturnalia and Watusi. Other than playing most of the new one which was to be expected, I felt the show was more weighted to the Bizzarro/Seamonsters period especially since their last 3 songs were from those albums Maybe everyone going so nuts for Kennedy paid off :)

I'll disagree with this. Shake it really isn't one of the better songs off Watusi, just the best example.

I'm probably biased towards the Weddoes though 'cause I like their other stuff much more.
