I wasn't super impressed. I thought the film making was good, but the material kinda sucked. Maybe I'm alone on this, but I think these are two of the most boring bands on the planet. Halfway through it seemed like this was some video to make Courtney Taylor feel better about his band. Maybe it was the filmmaker's fault b/c I was never drawn into the characters or saw any compelling relationships btwn the two bands.

The Dandys (especially homeboy with the bleachy hair) come off as the bitchiest bunch of fags (there's just no other word, sorry) while Anton, is well. ANTON. And Anton gets what Anton wants.

Just saw this over the weekend. I had to stop about 20 minutes into it, because it was so mind-numbing and boring. So I picked it up again the next day, and watched it all the way through.

Admittedly, I'm a Dandys fan, but I can see how they don't appeal to mass audiences, esp. here in the US. I had never really listened to Brian Jonestown Massacre before, but that guy Anton is a complete tool. The thing I didn't get is how these record folks were just singing the praises of BJM, and I'm like, "Hello? Are we talking about the same band here?" I just found their stuff pretty derivative (which is apt for Dandys as well-- their stuff appeals to me on a very surface level). The whole Anton "I'm just trying to make music/feel sorry for me cuz I'm the only one who works around here/I don't want to be compared to anybody but let me tell you about that damned Courtney Taylor" bullshit was just ridiculous. My husband and I both clapped heartily when he got fruit thrown at him onstage.

Ultimately, I wonder why in the hell the filmmaker chose these two bands to chronicle when there are far more interesting, talented bands out there.

Anton hears your thoughts. You will be punished in the after-this.

Not a fan of either bands, tho.

And just as "Orion" starts to play from the cube behind me. Weird.

dnorwood, I couldn't agree more. Also after fifteen minutes, didn't the whole movie reveal itself? I mean what did ithe rest of the movie add to it? It seemed like it just went on and on ad nauseaum to me.

While we are on the subject: I'd like to bludgeon that broad in the Dandy Warhols with a claw hammer...

And then make sweet hate to her.....

Reverse this and then you have my feelings. I can't stand the Dandy's music and I'm a big fan for a few years now of BJM. Anton really is just Anton. He's a bit fucked up what with his family history and all, and well Courtney Taylor made the choice to be an asshole. I agree with the Senator on that one, he was the one that came off bitchy.

I thought the film was interesting and entertaining and spliced to hell. They stop way too soon historically. It cuts off around 2000 I think(it never felt definitive as to when) and a lot of crap happened after that, so that sucks.

(and for the record the post was said in a nice way in case that came off Bitchy, sorry Dana if it did)

I liked it and think that both of those bands suck real bad. to me it was a story about two bands who were both in the right place at the right time and had designs on being the "next big thing", just one was willing to play the game and the other couldn't stay out of its own way. i enjoyed watching the carnage.

I had no prior knowledge of BJT's music till the movie, and thougth it sucked from the performances on the film. All the songs were indistinguishable. That's why I thought it was funny when Courtney Taylor said something like "everytime I'm proud of myself, Anton plays me his stuff and I'm blown away. He's two years ahead of everybody." He obviously is on crack. I think the Dandy's music can be fun in extremely limited doses. Not a fan but I don't hate either. I also think Anton is smarter and not as dilussional as he puts on. I'll give BJT the benefit of the doubt for now b/c the performances on the film might now have been the best.

Got to agree with Yail about the bitch from the Dandys being utterly annoying. Especially in the extra features when she starts talking about her babies rituals and crap. Step away from the magic cards honey.

Oh, see, I didn't even BOTHER to put the extra features dvd in to watch, but I can see how she might be annoying.

No, Charli, your post wasn't bitchy. :)

oldbulee, yeah that whole "Anton's two years ahead" stuff was ludicrous. Wha??? Admittedly, the guy seemed talented, as long as he wasn't talking trash or strung out, which seemed to be the majority of the film.

I've no doubt that the movie was slanted towards the Dandys favor more than BJM-- I don't know the history or connections with the filmmaker, and what her personal preferences were. Yeah, the Dandys seemed all too willing to play the corporate game. "Yeah, our single is HUGE in Belgium!" (can you guess that movie quote?)

random thought: I think the director's name was Ondi, which made me think of Ondine, the crazy motherfucker in Andy Warhol's world.

i actually really enjoyed this film.... thing about it that i didn't like was how they stopped filming bjm in 1997 and kept going w/the dandys til 2003. i think the way the film was edited was to make anton look worse than he really is. i only like a few songs by the dandys (i mean come on- how retarded was that video for that heroin is so passe song?! i cracked up when bjm was in the van mocking them after the video shoot for that song) but i enjoy bjm's music. different strokes for different folks i guess.
