so i "obtained" that one chase recommended (beg, scream & shout!) and yeah its fucking great, and now i want more.

The Complete Stax-Volt Singles 1959-1968 one seems kindda overlong. should i be lookin into it? what's like the definitive or the most essential one?

The Stax comp can be overwhelming, as can this, but both are unbelievably thorough and worth every penny. The Atlantic series is also available in individual, chronological single cd comps (easier on the wallet and infinitely more digestable).

I've also picked up a handful of Souljazz comps based upon board recs and dig the shit out of each one.

My friend is a dj / major record collector, and he put together a soul mix a few years back that I listen to fairly frequently. I can rip it for you if you'd like. I don't have a tracklisting, though.

If you want '70s R&B, there's this Rhino box set.

The Stax box is so heavily represented by Otis Redding and William Bell that I kind of feel you're better off just buying some Redding and Bell and getting a more broad-based comp.

I'd get the one HL recommended over the Stax box. I don't personally have it, but recognize a ton of great songs on it. I'm a huge 70's soul fan though.

Those soul jazz comps are great esp. the Miami one and the New Orleans ones. Those blaxploitation compilations are pretty great too if you can find them. I am also a big fan of Basement Tracks: Soul Ballads From the Heart of Black America. No hits but lots of great songs that you wouldn't discover elsewhere.

I'm planning to buy this soon:

More info and a few sampleshere.

looks really interesting, i may have to check that out. i always liked that Andre Williams song on there, but when it came out i feel like it was billed on the 7" as Andre Williams with Two Star Tabernacle. Have they relabeled it as Jack White to make it sound better, or did those two re-record it?

I'm biased- but there is a fantastic compilation called Wheedle's Groove which highlights many unknown Seattle soul acts from the 70's and its amazing stuff.

Chase - don't know the answer to your question.

Jimmy - I don't have and haven't heard Wheedle's Groove but I was under the impression that it was more Funk than Soul. No?

Both elements are there, but plenty of soul music. I consider funk more along the lines of Funkadelic/Parliament ( lots of long spacey jams), and I know this isn't completely accurate.
