I'd start with Hats.

A Walk Across The Rooftops is my personal favourite.

They only have four CDs over 24 years, and a rarities disc, so either of the first two will work.

I can't imagine what it's like to become a Blue Nile fan in 2005, since I got swept up in '83 and their sound has been a crucial part of my adult psyche all this time.

Hope you like them.

I am a huge Blue Nile fan... I have seen them perform live after Hats, which given their reclusive, mysterious Scottish existence, may never happen again.

They would be the Great Lost Unknown Band for the Brit-addicts, if they hadn't produced the last two cd's, which sounded to my ears just ever so dated. The synths, the tortured vocals, the airy atmospherics are just too 80's... without any ironic deconstruction (cf. Macha's last "Forget Tomorrow).

But Rooftops and Hats, in that order, are two of the most achingly beautiful pieces of music ever recorded. If you like Roxy Music's Avalon, you will need to have these.

I vote Hats.

I always thought Peter Gabriel's vocals on "Red Rain" were totally inspired by the Blue Nile--and I was right; he copped to it in an interview somewhere.

Whoa. Found a copy of Hats for $2.00. I'll be giving it a spin tonight.
