I confess that I've never heard any Slint in my life though I've heard them namechecked many a time over the years.

Today I was reading a pretty interesting article about them in The New Yorker and have to say that now I'm interested in hearing what they sound like, especially after the writer mentioned that they influenced bands like Mogwai, who I like, quite a bit. Steve Albini gives it a ten stars rating.

My question: Do you think that this is a crucial album that I should go out and buy or is it one of those that may have lost some of its magic and power for a new listener now that its 15 years old?

Your thoughts on the matter?

It's good, but I prefer June of '44 and The For Carnation most days of the week.

Its a great album as far as early '90s indie rock goes. Mogwai puts them to shame.

Steve Albini also produced the last Godspeed album.

This is not to sound like a poseur asshole, but I think the disparity on the opinion of this record comes mostly from the time one discovered it. This was a college record for me back in the early 90's and I found it to be a mind blower. Jane's Addiction and Nirvana were the big shit and these guys took things in a completely different direction.

I loved it then and love it now, but have seen many times where people who have listened extensively to Mogwai, or other post/math bands just don't see anything special about it.

It's funny because the band themselves don't hold the project in high regard whatsoever, but critics and fans (see Albini) love it as one of the best releases of the 90's.

It's a great album but, taken out of a time/influential context, it doesn't hold up as well. It reminds me of Loveless by My Bloody Valentine in that regard...

I didn't hear Loveless until about six months ago, and it still blew my mind. I've never really understood the time context thing (except for Springsteen, who rubs a lot of my younger friends the 80's way (wrong way.))

Wow, Loveless still sounds better than anything I've heard this decade.

I think Spiderland is a must-listen. Like Laughing Stock and Spirit of Eden, it is a far better achievement than all of the post-rock that came tumbling after, although I don't have much use for it these days outside of Breadcrumb Trail and Captain. But on particularly dark days...it's a good one to have around.

The one that sounded like total utter shit. Steve Albini is the worst producer ever.
