here's the schedule:

Nov 11—19

In 1984, Jim Jarmusch’s Stranger Than Paradise ushered
in a new era for American independent filmmaking with
its punk rock DIY aesthetic inspiring directors across
the country and around the world. Now, after twenty
years, BAMcinématek takes a look back at Jarmusch’s
ongoing career that includes some of the most
cross-cultural, music-driven, innovatively cast, and
atmospheric films of the past two decades. All films
directed by Jim Jarmusch.

Permanent Vacation (1981) 75min
Thu, Nov 11 at 7:30pm
With Chris Parker, Leila Gastil
Jarmusch’s first feature focuses on a young man
wandering through a surreal landscape of New York
City, populated by outcasts. Jarmusch’s flair for
capturing life one vignette at a time is on display,
and his visual flair seems almost full-formed.
Followed by
Int. Trailer. Night (2002) 10min
With Chloë Sevigny
Produced for the international compendium Ten Minutes
Older: The Trumpet, this rarely-seen short documents
ten minutes in the life of an actress on location for
a film shoot.

Stranger Than Paradise (1984) 89min
Fri, Nov 12 at 2, 4:30, 6:50, 9:30pm
With John Lurie, Eszter Balint, Richard Edson
One of the most influential independent films ever
made, Jarmusch employs a supremely minimalist style
(with a strong musical assist from Screaming Jay
Hawkins) to tell the story of a downtown hipster who
unhappily plays host to a visiting cousin, but then
misses her once she’s gone. Defying categorization,
the film is a laconic road movie, a portrait of
loneliness and outsider culture, and a masterpiece of
deadpan humor.

Down by Law (1986) 107min
Sat, Nov 13 at 2, 4:30, 6:50, 9:15pm
With Tom Waits, John Lurie, Roberto Benigni
Waits and Lurie are framed, thrown in jail, and end up
sharing a cell with Benigni, who proposes they break
out. The trio’s hilarious flight from the law makes
this one of Jarmusch’s funniest and warmest films.
It’s also his first with cinematographer Robby Müller,
whose stunning black & white photography makes the
southern landscapes shimmer.

Dead Man (1995) 121min
Sun, Nov 14 at 2, 4:30, 6:50, 9:15pm
With Johnny Depp, Gary Farmer
Jarmusch’s most ambitious film to date, Dead Man is an
epic anti-Western set in the 1800s that subverts genre
cliches at every turn. Depp is magnificent as a simple
accountant who runs into trouble, with Farmer as
“Nobody,” the Native American outcast who befriends
him on a surrealistic journey. Other highlights
include cameos by Crispin Glover, Robert Mitchum, and
Iggy Pop (to name a few) and Neil Young’s indelible
electric guitar score.

Mystery Train (1989) 113min
Mon, Nov 15 at 4:30, 6:50*, 9:30pm
*Q&A with actor Cinque Lee moderated by Bloomberg
Radio's Judy Speicher after screening
A tribute to the city of Memphis and the mythology of
Elvis, Mystery Train looks at one night from three
points of view: a Japanese couple who speak no
English, an Italian woman transporting her husband’s
body, and a drunken night out for some old friends.
The cast includes Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and Cinque Lee
as hotel clerks and Joe Strummer as a belligerent
drunk named Elvis in this comedy of mistakes and
misunderstandings.

Night on Earth (1991) 129min
Tue, Nov 16 at 6, 9pm
With Winona Ryder, Giancarlo Esposito, Roberto
Benigni, Matti Pellonpää.
Five stories from five different taxis around the
world make up this anthology film. An LA cabbie tries
to convince a passenger to cast her in a movie; a New
Yorker discovers his driver doesn’t know how to drive
a car; a driver picks up a blind Parisian woman;
Roberto Benigni confesses his sexual problems to a
priest; and (in a tip of the hat to Aki Kaurismäki), a
driver silences his rowdy passengers with a tale of
infinite sadness. The segments move quickly from humor
to pathos, while uncovering small gems of humanity in
each.

New Print!
Year of the Horse (1997) 106min
Thu, Nov 18 at 7:30pm
With Neil Young, Crazy Horse
A defiantly low-fi documentary tribute to Neil Young
and Crazy Horse, this “made loud to be played loud”
documentary captures Young and his band on their
whirlwind 1996 tour. Young sounds better than ever,
and the graininess and vibrant colors of the footage
(both archival and new material) emphasize the rawness
and vitality of the music.

Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999) 116min
Fri, Nov 19 at 2, 4:30, 6:50, 9:15pm
With Forest Whitaker
In a brilliant performance of physical subtlety,
Whitaker plays Ghost Dog, a samurai hitman who works
for an Italian gangster. Just as the RZA’s exceptional
score cuts and slices its music cues into new beats
(creating the best soundtrack of the year), Jarmusch
draws on Kurosawa films, gangster epics, cartoon
violence, and the samurai “Hagakure” textbook to
create a postmodern film that defies easy description.
