I have decided to buy either a bike or skateboard to get around the city better, but I can't decide. A bike will go faster with less effort, but a skateboard would be more fun. Plus, with a skateboard you can mess around when you're bored, which you can't do as much with a bike. The hills in San Francisco would be vicious with a skateboard, but my friends live in less-hilly areas anyway.

if it's mostly for transporation i'd go with a bike.
if it's also for fun i'd go with the skateboard. skateboarding ranks as #3 in my life behind food and sleep. friends and family are in there too.

skating seems like a really hard way to get around. I think walking is more effective.

Bike.

Wrong. You can fuck off easily with a bike. Lots of stuff to huckoffa.

I vote for the bike, altho that bikeboard sure looks like fun.

both. i ride a bike for longer distances and if i have to truck around more stuff. i have a badass milk crate rack on my beater that's sweet for hauling massive amounts of whatever. i use my skateboard if i have to run around the corner to get milk. i disagree that it's more inefficient than walking. i can get around way faster on it, as long as i stay off the sidewalk and on the road.

If you do get a skateboard for street riding, get a longboard. They're so cool.

I miss how everybody commutes via skateboard in Eugene, OR. I actually saw this contractor guy getting off of work, walking off site down to the stree with his yellow hard hat on, a lunch pail in one hand, and an ancient short board in the other. He got down to the street, tossed his board down in front of him, and off he went, heading home. On another occasion, my wife and I saw a guy in a nicely pressed business suit, zipping home on his long board with briefcase in hand.
