If you don't want to invest in the box set, I suggest starting here:

[img][200:200]http://www.maths.dundee.ac.uk/~sanderso/music/on_fire.jpg[/img]

It's my personal fave of theirs, plus it's been recently remastered.

Edit: RIYL: the softer side of the Velvet Underground, the softer side of Pavement, Lou Reed sleepwalking

The Portable Galaxie 500 is a decent jumping off point as well.

The box set is worth it, although, their last album is noticeably weaker than their others in my opinion. Not bad. Just not quite as good as the first 2.

HELL YES x 1000!!!

The box set is OOP, but the individual albums can usually be found for decent prices on eBay or Amazon Marketplace. Get them all, and don't forget the live release Copenhagen.
