I don't know what I was doing in 1995 but I completely bypassed hearing this album until recently. Here's what AMG has to say about it:

It was probably David Bowie's record-company affiliation difficulties that kept the 1993 Buddha of Suburbia soundtrack to a British TV miniseries from being released in the U.S. until 1995, when it was slipped out in the wake of his new album, Outside. That's too bad, because The Buddha of Suburbia is an often engaging collection of songs and instrumental passages that recalls many previous Bowie albums, including such disparate efforts as The Man Who Sold the World, Aladdin Sane, and Low. It's not a major effort by any means, but in another context songs like "Strangers When We Meet" easily could become Bowie favorites.

never been a big bowie fan but i love that song.

I picked this up in 93 while in Europe, and it has been one of my favorite Bowie albums since... and that is saying something, since I'm a huge Bowie fan.

This is a great album for those people who dislike Bowie's over-emotive vocals - since it is a soundtrack he keeps everything low-key.

Yeah, I finished listening to it for the first time last night and really liked it. A lot of it is quiet and ambient in a low-key kind of way for the soundtrack.

The album shows a musical progression between what he was doing with the soulful funk of Black Tie, White Noise to the dirty and industrial-influenced Outside, both Bowie albums that I really enjoy. For me, listening to this album was like finding a lost snapshot. Very cool.

I would have never guessed this. Really? I guess I'm always surprised whenever anyone doesn't like Bowie as (besides being one of my top 3-5 alltime favs) he's my biggest "common ground" type artist. Having a couple of year glimpse of your taste, I would have thought you would be a fan at least of Hunky Dory & Alladin Sane if nothing else.

I'm not a big fan either. I thought I was until one day when I listened to a bunch of his stuff on my Ipod on shuffle and realized I couldn't really stand that much of it.

I like some Bowie, but not the stuff that's going to get me cool-marks in anyone's book. I love Heathen, really like Reality, and even quite enjoy the Tin Machine albums (I know!) along with parts of Outside and Hours. But for "old Bowie," all I need is the two-disc Best Of Bowie. I just like hearing this "mature Bowie" sound that he's developed lately. I think it's classy and yet still pretty rockin' at the same time.

And, yeah, "Strangers When We Meet" is a really beautiful song.
