yes, I did meet him and talk to him. He was bald and tan and had his wife who is a photographer and is showing at Pace Macgill and was really nice and not at all a trophy wife...she was the same age-ish, he and my boss were quite good friends at one point...both of them looked REALLY good for their age. he said "I think we have spoken on the phone before" and I said "yes"

Don't you think it's really crap that no one paints anymore and it's all video installations and piles of bricks? If any up-and-coming art student was to paint a picture these days they would probably be mocked and heckled out of art school! "Malaise" doesn't even cover it!

And don't get me started on about 93% of modern architecture! Even if I had the money I wouldn't buy a house just because they look so ghastly. You know how the Israelis bulldoze the homes of suspected Hamas members? We'll I think we should import that concept. If your home doesn't have metopes on the exterior it's coming down philistine! Your home is now a hard hat zone! Take it away boys!

videos bore me to tears. i have no patience for them. at all.

painting has been making a comeback the past few years. whether you like his work or not i think john currin had a lot to do with that. a year or two ago he was on the cover of the ny times magazine and he had a huge show at the whitney.

a lot of grad schools are also focusing on painting. columbia is the "hot" school now and students are getting signed to galleries and selling complete shows before they even graduate. of course this is a bit of a trend and i have a feeling their wok is selling at inflated prices right now because of a trend. most of them will plummet severely in the next 5 years.

and just because there's a focus on painting doesn't mean it's good. you can tell painting is becoming trendy because that idiot damien hirst just had a show of paintings which he had assistants paint for him. he added a few finishing touches and they all sold for top price but were total crap. everybody knew it too but he's art's favorite bad boy so people pay. ugh. i hate him.
