Inspired by Yail's post in the Dylan thread:
My picks:
"Don't Think Twice (It's Allright)" -Bob Dylan
"Kiss Off" - Violent Femmes (of course)

And the timeless:
"Take This Job and Shove It" - Johnny Paycheck

Available (by the National from "Sad Songs..."

Did you clean yourself
for me last night
put the water out and donned a marigold
in your hair to bring me here
and tie one on you

did you dress me down and liquor me up
to make me last for the minute
when the red comes over you
like it does when you're filled with love
or whatever you call it

do you feel alone when I'm in my head
while you wait for me
to take my breath
do you still feel clean
when the only dirt is the dirt I left
how can you blame yourself
when I did everything I wanted to

you just made yourself available
you just made yourself available

why did you dress me down (repeat)
and liquor me up (repeat)

"Idiot Wind" - Bob Dylan
"Positively 4th Street" - Bob Dylan

feels like I just did this.......

Edit: oops just read Todd's post and realized I was the impetus for the thread.

So I'll add Warren Zevon - "The French Inhaler"

absolutely. it's worth posting the lyrics here:

It ain’t no use to sit and wonder why, babe
It don’t matter, anyhow
An’ it ain’t no use to sit and wonder why, babe
If you don’t know by now
When your rooster crows at the break of dawn
Look out your window and I’ll be gone
You’re the reason I’m trav’lin’ on
Don’t think twice, it’s all right

It ain’t no use in turnin’ on your light, babe
That light I never knowed
An’ it ain’t no use in turnin’ on your light, babe
I’m on the dark side of the road
Still I wish there was somethin’ you would do or say
To try and make me change my mind and stay
We never did too much talkin’ anyway
So don’t think twice, it’s all right

It ain’t no use in callin’ out my name, gal
Like you never did before
It ain’t no use in callin’ out my name, gal
I can’t hear you any more
I’m a-thinkin’ and a-wond’rin’ all the way down the road
I once loved a woman, a child I’m told
I give her my heart but she wanted my soul
But don’t think twice, it’s all right

I’m walkin’ down that long, lonesome road, babe
Where I’m bound, I can’t tell
But goodbye’s too good a word, gal
So I’ll just say fare thee well
I ain’t sayin’ you treated me unkind
You could have done better but I don’t mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don’t think twice, it’s all right

this one is a close second for me, though i have to admit to liking the jerry garcia/merl saunders version better than the dylan one.

took the songs right out of my mouth.

I'd like to add :

YOUR DICTIONARY - XTC
perhaps the kiss-off of all kiss-off songs.

Speaking of XTC:
"Dear God"

I would argue is moreso the "kiss-off of all kiss-off songs, if only for whom the singer is addressing.)

i don't think that i'm quite getting it and i feel like i have an answer that i can't nail.

This is quite often my favorite WZ song.

I don't know if I told you this, Mark; but my old boss' name is Michael Caputo.

Marvin Gaye - When did You Stop Loving Me, When did I stop Loving You

Quote:
Do you remember all the bullshit, baby?
You say you love me with all your heart
If you ever loved me with all your heart
You'd never take a million dollars to part

I really tried, you know I tried
Although we tried, all of those promises
Was nothing but lies
And I really tried
You know how hard I tried
All that rehearsin', we really lied
Didn't we, baby
And on top of that you have scandalized
My name

What I can't understand is if you love me
How could you turn me into the police?
Didn't I love you good
And try to take care of you the best I could?
You were so divine
And your love was like mellow wine

Pains of love, miles of tears enough to last me
For my lifetime
Broken hearts last for years, soon break away to the
Noonday sunshine

One thing I can promise, friend,
I'll never be back again

From "Here, My Dear", the album that the divorce settlement gave Anna Gordy 100% of the royalties for.

Sort of. Marvin Gaye owed her in the neighborhood of $600,000, half of which came from the advance on the record, and the remainder was to come from future royalties. However, if the record didn't sell enough to cover the second half, he still had to pay out of pocket.

It didn't sell enough, but before she got the cash, Marvin Gaye was bankrupt, then dead. By that time, the tax man came and collected their cut, and I don't think Anna nor the kids ever got the remaining $300,000.
