Someone must've posted this already, but I did a search for the word "immortals" and found nothing.

Rolling Stone picked their 100 immortals of rock. Looks like a pretty good list, if you ignore the ranking and the fact that Muddy Waters' name is spelled wrong:

The first 50: http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/_/id/5939214
Second half: http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/_/id/7235505

50% of their top ten and 60% of their to 15 are or have members who be dead. So much for your "immortal".

What a bunch of idiots at that rag.

And to read Elvis Costello gush about the Beatles? I can't bring myself to click that link and suffer such punishment. Someone should really beat him repeatedly with a metal pipe.

I don't think 39 of 100 black artists is a bad ratio.

i found the issues kind of boring, but mostly because the've been doing so much of this stuff latley that i'm a bit burned out on the concept.

i'm sick of any of the myriad of "[our magazine] picks the 100 most[insert dumbass criteria here] of All Time!!!" the shit is useless, always has been always will be. Not that our lists here are any different, but most of us have better taste than that so it's cool.

did they really spell muddy waters wrong? the man the magazine got its name from had his name spelled wrong. retarded.

I disagree. The list itself isn't all that interesting but as a collective group we wouldn't do much better. For every undeserving Elton John and John Cougar Mellencamp on their list, there would be a fuckin' Bright Eyes on ours.

And while we can put together a list, they can get Keith Richards to write a couple hundred words on Gram Parsons and Robbie Robertson to write about Dylan, Isaac Hayes to write about his Stax mates Booker T & the MG's, etc etc. They are the only US magazine that can do that and its exactly the sort of thing Rolling Stone should be doing more of.

Yes, but they don't have Jerome Evans And The Furys or Pinkard & Bowden. Of course we're displeased.

I never realized that we disagreed that much. :? but whatever.

Speaking of Booker T & the MG's, Wax Poetics had an interesting couple of long articles in their Winter issue about the making of Wattstax and the role Stax played in the equal rights movement in 60's Memphis. They talked alot about how the fact that Booker T & the MG's were a racially integrated band was extremely rare in the those days and the problems it caused them in playing in the south.

Interesting stuff. I really want to see Wattstax now. It was on cable not too long ago and I couldn't be bothered to watch or tivo it :(

We don't really; i'm just waaay more mainstream than you; and I still like rock music alot. :D

So we probably have more unspoken disagreements.

There was a tremendous, hold on TREMENDOUS documentary that I saw on Stax, hmm, maybe it was A&E or Bravo in about 1998. I remeber this b/c i was pulling an all nighter trying to write a 20 page paper on turn of the late 19th century American cultural relevance or some nonsense and this amazing doc. came on.

This shit was the bomb, they had some footage that I'd never even heard of let alone seen.....
