the musicianship goes through the roof.

I just love Hubert Laws flute playing on Gil Scott-Heron's "Pieces of a Man"

and the playing of Ron Miles, Don Byron and Ornette Coleman on recent Joe Henry albums

Anyone with me? What are some of your favorites?

That's immediately what I thought of when I saw the thread title.

John Zorn with The Boredoms.
Vernon Reid on every Living Colour album.
Charlie Watts on every Rolling Stones album.

I like that album a lot...along the same lines is Love "Forever Changes" for its orchestral arrangements. But I was really thinking more of examples when stud jazz musicians played in a non-jazz setting. I don't have the liner notes in front of me but I don't remember anyone really notable playing on either album or is my memory shoddy?

Mike Garson - plays on Bowie's "Alladin Sane", BTW, Garson's album "The Oxnard Sessions vol. II" is a stellar modern jazz album.
Shelley Manne on Tom Waits' "Small Change".

Another would be Joni Mitchell's "Mingus" which in addition to being co-written by Charles Mingus features Herbie Hancock on keys, Wayne Shorter on Sax and Emil Richards on Percussion among others.

Every Steely Dan album ever.

Larry Carlton, Wayne Shorter, Victor Feldman, Pete Christlieb, Michael Omartian etc, etc.

Accompanying himself on acoustic guitar, Morrison sings in his elastic, bluesy voice, accompanied by a jazz rhythm section (Jay Berliner, guitar, Richard Davis, bass, Connie Kay, drums), plus reeds (John Payne) and vibes (Warren Smith, Jr.), with a string quartet overdubbed.

I wouldn't know if they are notable or not. But there they are from AMG.

You forgot Jaco Pastorius and Peter Erskine play on Mingus as well. She's used other notables on other albums such as Larry Carlton, Chuck Findley, Robben Ford, Larry Nash, Tom Scott, John Guerin, and Max Bennett.

Just remembered this one while posting in the "curating yr own tribute" thread:

Ian Hunter All American Alien Boy - bass throughout is handled by Jaco Pastorius (and his playing on the title track is stellar), and David Sanborn guests as well.

Does anyone remember Billy Cobham playing drums for Bob Weir, aka Bobby & The Midnights (Midnites?).

C'mon, whose idea was that??

Also the guy who played drums on that Steely Dan live disc- oh, man who was that. Overplayed wayyyy too much for the SD-type of music.
