My dad was born in Canada but served in The U.S. Army in WW2. I guess he can claim both sides. Oh, but I guess he didn't die in war, though...I wouldn't be here, probably.

What might have you confused is that the tradition of honoring the war dead began after the Civil War (some say in the south) and for a time (maybe still) some southern states insisted on setting aside a seperate day to honor confederate soldiers. The history behind the holiday (like most I suppose) is very convoluted.

That's a whole lot of parentheses.

Word. I also just recently (funny, I have degrees in History and Political Science and never learned this, stupid southern land grant university...) learned that Memorial Day used to be called Decoration Day which lends a whole new, even crazier kind of fucked upness to the song of same name.

My grandfather was an airforce pilot. He joined up in 1939 and got home in 1947. He served in Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and South East Asia.

He often used to say that he "didn't see any American planes during the Battle of Britain". He also used to complain that later in the war Americans did a tour of duty and then went home. He was at war for the whole 6 years.
