I am going out to New York City for 3 months this summer and... well... what's a midwestern girl know about indie rock in NYC? Nada. Where is the scene out there? Local bars, coffee houses, venues...? Any up-and-comers that haven't made it out of the city yet?

3 months puts me into August... 10/5 doesn't do much for me. Thanks, though.

Hey yo. I've lived in NYC for about a year... it's really tough to say where the "scene" is - I haven't noticed any discernible scenes where I've been. Most smaller shows happen in the Lower East Side, places like Pianos, Sin-e, Mercury Lounge, Luna Lounge, etc. I recommend picking up TimeOut New York regularly and scanning the week's concerts... you're not likely to miss much that way.

Maybe you should post this in Rock/Pop. Want me to move it there?

Thanks for the help... I try to read the New Yorker as regularly as possible, I seem to find interesting stuff in there. But hey, that would be fantastic if you could move it there! Thanks again, every little bit helps.

like Haq said...

Grab the Village Voice on Tuesday nights or Wed mornings, and Time out New York, and you'll have a good idea of everything going on.

Yeah, I agree. Time Out NY is the Bible of the what's happening in NY. The first thing you need to do when you arrive is go to the nearest newsstand and buy the latest issue. It comes out on Thursdays so be sure not to buy it on Tuesday or Wednesday. Wait for the new issue instead. That's the best advice anyone can give you regarding the music scene in NYC. Enjoy!

In Brooklyn you can catch some good shows at North 6 in williamsburg, and Southpaw in park slope. Read about who's playing where at www.ohmyrockness.com , and if you're trying to learn about who's getting buzz both from the city and from other places, check out some of the NY music bloggers, www.oneloudernyc.com and www.stereogum.com being good places to start... you'll find what you're looking for.

*also a midwestern transplant*

Thanks for the input all, much appreciated. I won't have access to a computer out there unless the hotel has one, but when I get the chance, I'll let ya'll know how it goes.

Also, I've tried jazz... can't get into it a whole lot. I love blues and I am very willing to see what the Big Apple music scene has to offer.

I think you misspelled the word "do".

Or maybe you didn't.
